A bird had alighted on a branch in the garden.
A bird on a branch in the garden alighted
Whenever it sang, it began creating new melodies,
When it sang, it invented new melodies

Sending its voice in waves among people, as
Making its voice ripple through people
Light rippled over the water, then gleamed.
As light ripples over water, gleaming

It draws dawn near with inventive song,
It brings dawn closer with innovative singing
And drives night away with ingenious song.
And makes the night recede with creative singing

It was lent, of the universe's delights, those most moving
I borrow from the universe's joys, arranging them
To the soul—color and form, both united in it.
Into a shape and color within it assembled

And the branch, in its good fortune, rejoiced unceasingly,
The branch in its happiness does not cease swaying
Bestowing its green leaves on the bird, reaching upward.
Its green leaves adore it, proliferating

And it bends toward the nearby water, bringing it to drink,
And it curves toward the softness of water, reddening
And brings forth bright bounties, fashioning them.
Producing ripe fruit, artificially ripening

And carries the bird, content with it; and if
The bird rests on it contentedly, and if
It shows it submission out of love, it has not truly submitted.
It shows submission to it, lovingly, not forced

Each is happy in what its companion has gained—
Each is happy with what the other attained
This one through that one, with no loss to a partner.
This one with that, no loss to the intermediary

But one day the bird was shown a flower, and it departed,
But I see the bird one day fly to a flower
And left the branch distraught among its leaves.
Leaving the branch stripped, grieving

So the branch's sorrows withered its freshness,
The branch's blossoms wither, its vigor fades
And it remained apprehensive, terrified in its despair.
And it remains anxious in despair

And its despair in darkness will surely kill it,
Its despair at an absent love will surely kill it
Over its beloved, who departed and never returned.
For a beloved who turned away, never to return

It embraced silence, complaining to no one
And no one saw or heard a thing.
And no one saw or heard anything
