Stop, you two; console a captive before parting.

For the nearness of parting—away with parting!—has tormented me.

Dust in your mouth, O croaker of our parting!

For you have only announced the lovesick man's death.

From loving the beautiful one I have borne what, if

A head bore it, would make it totter and fall.

Such as streaming tears that furrowed my eye sockets,

And blazing passion whose heat split my heart.

God be with her, so infatuated with her own beauty:

No place in her heart lies vacant for me.

Nor handsome, that my beauty should captivate her.

As though her eyes held the sickness that afflicts me.

She has a tender arm like a scroll of silver,

And another like palm pith showered with morning rain.

Her eyes and gentle speech bewitched me,

And I found no one to charm their two spells away from me.

Claiming there was no excuse for my folly.

I passed on, as a noble man passes by idle talk,

And sought refuge in my forbearance from debating a babbler.

There is no disgrace upon me in loving her,

For my cloak has kept chaste, reaching for nothing forbidden.

Stirred tormenting longing in me as it lay still.

As though the stars' trembling, with night a vast sea,

Were ships driven onward by dust-scattering winds.

I sat until dawn's first swell appeared,

Like a grizzled man struggling afloat in the deep.

And lightning appeared in it, its flash like

The blazing fires of love within my heart.

When a lover's eye takes it for kohl, he spends the night

With his bed rejecting him until dawn.

It flashed in the east, and at its gleam there poured

A bucketful of tears, almost rivaling the water-drawing camels.

Gray doves, whose dewy melodies kindled my heart,

Sang upon a bough, and I burst into tears.

We spent the day: they told me the tale of their sorrows,

And I recited to them rhymes about the one I love—

With which al-Radi al-Musawi was well pleased.

They hold the soul and cleave closely to the heart,

And fulfill the needs of souls just as they are.

Their meanings shone; their wording spoke clearly,

Firm in construction, delicate at the edges.

Through them a poet revealed what he kept concealed,

One who rose above panegyric and was no satirist.

Poetry is only what love casts forth,

Devoid of falsehood, free of shameful speech.

And made the drunken-eyed woman mistress of my heart,

Might steal into Nuhayla's unyielding heart.

It is grief enough that, when love presses hard upon me

And splits my heart, I find no one to console me.

If one day I confess my love, they will brand me a heretic.

Were it not for a brother who once relieved my anguish,

I would have lain in the grave before today.

And a day when we were alone, with no cause for suspicion—

Its memory tears my heartstrings with yearning.

While I drew back, dumbfounded by what had overcome me.

Stirred remembrance in me, though I had not forgotten.

Its maker made language pliant to its meaning,

And with it left the Sheikh of al-Maʿarra naked.

And thought's eye recoils from it, its vision dimmed.

And in it the tears of a lover sobbing far away,

And a likeness of every enthralled lover's feelings,

Which the stumbling mind falls short of grasping.

So I began shedding tears when I recited it,

Remembering days and nights gone by—

Nights we wished would last, and wished that

The blackness of my two eyes might be added to them.

I say, with estrangement prolonged and heartache overflowing,

With love relentless and raging longing dealing its deathblow:

My two friends, bind up my heart, for it

Has withered, thirsty for meeting and nearness.

Were it not for what Qays suffered on account of his verse,

I would have repeated it when I saw such estrangement:

    فهلاّ بشيءٍ غير (ليلى) ابتلانيا)

    'He decreed her for another and tried me with love for her;

Why did He not try me with something other than Layla?'

Over such things he spends the night, his soul flying

Apart—your young man; may you yourself live on.
