طالَgrew long ليليmy night وَتولاَّنيand took hold of me السهرْsleeplessness
وَفؤاديand my heart كادnearly شوقاًwith longing ينفطرْburst apart
My night has grown long, and sleeplessness has seized me.
The night was long, keeping me awake
And my heart nearly burst with longing.
And my heart almost broke from yearning

ماnot ابنُson of حِجْرٍHujr ماnot جميلٌJamil ماnot عمرْUmar
None among those laid low by love was like me—
None has suffered in love like I have
Not Ibn Hujr, nor Jamil, nor Umar.
Not a darling, not a beauty, not a life
فلقدfor indeed لاقيتI have suffered فيin حبّكloving you ياO
(ليلLayl (shortened address to Layla)) ماwhat لمnot يلقهhad experienced it قبليbefore me بشرa mortal
For I have suffered in loving you, O
For in loving you, O Night
Layl, what no mortal before me has suffered:
I found what no one before me has found

Sleeplessness, longing, and heartache
Of sleeplessness, longing, and burning
That nearly killed me, and tears pouring down.
It almost destroyed me, with tears flowing

رقَّwould soften منكof yours القلبُthe heart لوeven if كانit were حجرstone
If you saw me sleepless, complaining of love,
If you could see me staying up complaining of love
Your heart would soften, even if it were stone.
My heart would soften, even if it were stone
إنَّindeed هذاthis بعضpart of ماwhat قاسيتهI have endured it

والذيand what أكتمI conceal أدهىmore grievous وَأَمرّْand more bitter
Indeed, this is but part of what I have endured;
This is but some of what I suffered
And what I conceal is more grievous and more bitter.
What I conceal is worse and more bitter
