    How lovely she is, Tuwaythira,

    in a flowering garden!

Its days, because of the shade,

    are like moonlit nights.

    Its branches embrace,

    smooth and framed,

along the banks of a brook

    whose waters chatter.

    She appears, then hides,

    like a secluded maiden.

She has adorned herself, as though

    dressed up for her wedding,

in a dark hooded cloak, over

    a saffron-dyed robe.

Around her neck is a necklace

    of choice pearls, radiant.

And her breast is a patchwork of colors,

    variegated and changing.

You would take her for rays of light

    shining out from the clouds.

    Her beak and her eye:

    an agate and a jewel.

    And her palm is henna-stained,

    and her leg is bared.

    She looked about, suspicious,

    terrified and scared away,

    upward and downward,

    to right and to left.

And she flashed in an instant,

    glittering like a spark.

And she shook herself, as though

you had wetted her to spread it out.

    And she flicked her tail,

drawing it in to spread it out.

    And she shook her head,

    as though bowing in homage.

At times she drives others away,

and at times she is yellow-hued.

    And she fluttered her wing

    like a fiercely kindled flame,

    or sparks rising in

    a whirlwind from a brazier.

    And from here and there

    she spins like a pulley-wheel:

    a charge, then a flight,

a turn, then a backward retreat,

until it seems that one part of her

    bears a grudge against another.

    She skims low, then rises,

    like a bewildered feather.

When she rises, you would think her

    a fluttering butterfly;

and if she falls, she tumbles

    like a star falling down.

She was sparing with her mouth, like a bud

    closed tight, of a narcissus.

    Two opened from among

    its petals, early.

    And her neck-veins twitched,

    as though she were gargling.

    And she trilled her melody,

    repeating something unwelcome.

    Then, while she prolongs it,

    suddenly she cuts it short.

    Now she whistles,

    and now she chirrs shrilly.

    Her wing is fluttering,

as though it were a water lily.

    Marvel, then, at her—a songstress,

    a dancer and a piper!

    If her describer cannot encompass

her in words, let him be excused.

A keen tongue has grown weary

before her, and a clear-seeing eye as well.

And describing her is a path,

    as you see, newly devised.

    ذلَّلتُها مُيسَّره

    Its steep passes cannot be climbed;

I have tamed them, made them easy.
