They exchange beak-fed sweetness, honeyed with their saliva,
sea of poetry, foaming with desire.
and mingle souls with souls.

They never have their fill, nor is their thirst quenched,
the inspirer arousing me.
and sweetness tempts them to excess and insistence.

seek not corruption after repair.

You did not heed the sanctity of the valley, hurling at it

بحراً من الشعر عجاجاً لممتاح
Stand where I stood on the riverbanks; there you will find
every muddled speech that makes a child turn white-haired.
a roaring sea of poetry for anyone who draws from it.
Pasture for gazelles, make it not

O you who delight in its shelter, you are among a company
a dunghill for foxes and horned beasts.
where you see and hear the inspirer, the whisperer of revelation.
Do not frighten the doves from the boughs

Tell the one who muddied the clear water: 'Easy! Do not
with a snarling wolf or shrieking falcon.
seek to corrupt it after its restoration.'
Have mercy on the finches nesting on branches

فكفَّ عنه أَذى باغٍ ومجتاح
You drank the sweetest draught from its watering places;
from every black-fanged predator with claws unsheathed.
so spare it the harm of an aggressor and a ravager.

You did not honor the sanctity of a valley you kept pelting
fall to the wolf's claws or the butcher's knife.
with every crushing calamity that turns a child's hair gray.

A lovely pasture for herds of gazelles—do not
its pasture will always provide provender.
make it a dung-heap for bellowing and butting beasts.

And do not scare off the birds' cooing songstresses
of treating it; a locked door unopened by its key is useless.
on the branches with lowing or yelping beasts.

And be gentle with the downy young crouched in their nests,
I feared for it, for sailors are treacherous.
guarding them from every black, two-fanged, hissing snake.
I see the stars healing their positions

Nor frighten the gentle lambs as they graze
while symbols speak more clearly than plain commentary.
with a wolf's claw or a slaughterer's knife.

For a fertile dwelling, unless you guard its bounds,

will one day see its green pasture become parched ground.

what use is a stubborn lock without a key?

A ship: wild winds battered it
at night, and I feared a helmsman's cruelty to it.

I see the quiver bring healing in its proper places;

It is for me to loose the well-aimed arrow; no blame
is mine if it fails to sink into a crocodile's hide.
