حقُّthe duty البكاءِof weeping غَداةَon the morning of العيدِEid قدindeed وَجباhas become obligatory
Enough of reproach when my tears flow in torrents.
Enough with blame when my tears flow copiously,
Weeping on the morning of Eid has indeed become a duty.
Crying is right on the morning of Eid, it is obligatory,
منwhoever كانis يأَنسُfinds delight بالأَعيادِin festivals مبتهجاًrejoicing
فإِننيfor indeed I قدalready هجرتُhave forsaken الأُنسَjoy والطرباand merriment
Whoever finds delight in festivals, rejoicing—
Whoever feels happy during the festivals,
I, for my part, have already forsaken joy and merriment.
I have abandoned intimacy and cheerfulness,
إِنif قلتَyou say لاmay you not قلتَyou say فيon ذاthis العيدEid واطرباO joy!
فماso ... not يزالُceases مقاليmy utterance منكbecause of you واحرباO my grief!
If you say—may you not!—on this Eid, 'Oh, joy!'
If you say no, you said about this Eid be happy,
then my cry on your account is ever, 'Oh, my grief!'
Yet my words to you remain combative,

Its return has brought harm and sorrows
He who returns with harm and sorrows,
only to gather their scattered parts together.
Only to gather from them what dispersed,

The pain we suffer today did not suffice it,
It did not suffice what we suffer today of pain,
until it brought back upon us the pain that had gone away.
Until it relieved upon us what was remote,

What memories does it bring back to nations
What does it celebrate for nations,
that have squandered glory, eminence, and ancestral honor?
That lost glory, supremacy, and pedigree?
