Do you recite a poem that has consumed the soul with grief
and added sorrow to its already fierce anguish?

وَليِّنةand the supple one المرّانof the ashwood spears أَنفذهاthe most penetrating of them كَلءماin wounding
Its author softened the wording to suit its meaning,
and the supple ashwood spear wounds most deeply.

كأنيas though I were عَجِيٌّa motherless suckling باتspent the night يَدَّكِرُremembering الأُمَّاthe mother
So it stirred my sorrows, and sorrow awakens sorrow,
as though I were a motherless suckling remembering his mother all night.
فقلتso I spoke أُجاريهِtrying to match him ومنand from قبلbefore لمnot يتحْbe granted
ليَto me القولspeech حتىto the point that خلتُI thought أَنْthat فميmy mouth كمّاwas gagged
So I spoke, trying to match him, though before I had been denied
speech, to the point that I thought my mouth was gagged.

And I know I cannot reach his heights,
yet we both mourn an exalted lord:
تباريحُtorments غيظٍof rage ماnot أطيقI can manage لهاfor them كظماrestraint
عَلَىagainst الدهرTime لماsince أصبحhas become الدهرُTime ليto me خصماan adversary
Torments of rage I cannot contain
against Time, since Time has become my foe.
لهto him الويلwoe منas an رامٍarcher أَصابstruck مَقاتليmy vital parts
عَلَىin غرَّةٍunawareness منيof mine فماand did not أَخطأَmiss المرمىthe mark
Woe to him, an archer who struck my vital parts
while I was off guard, and did not miss the mark.
عجبتُI marveled لهat him لماwhen أصابَhe struck وَلمand did not يخبْfail
وَقدthough already حملتْhad charged نحويtoward me نوائبُهhis calamities ظلماunjustly
I marveled at him when he struck and did not fail,
though his calamities had charged toward me unjustly.
وَلوand if كانhad been غيرsomeone other than الدهرTime رامsought خصومتيopposition to me

And had anyone but Time sought to oppose me,
I would not have feared injustice or oppression from him.
أَيفرخcan ... subside? روعيmy fear أَمor تقرُّbe still مضاجعيmy beds
وَقدwhile already نزلتْhas descended بيupon me كلُّevery داهيةٍcalamity دهماblack
Can my fear subside, or my beds know rest,
when every black calamity has descended upon me?

تخالهمُyou would think them لماwhen هوواthey fell للثَّرىto the dust نجماstars
My loved ones passed swiftly, one after another, to death;
you would think them stars as they fell to the dust.
فَمَنْso who ليfor me بأَنْthat أَتلوهمُI follow them غيرnot مبطىءٍdelaying
فقدfor indeed مرَّhas grown bitter هذاthis العيشُlife منfrom بعدهمْafter them طعماin taste
Who, then, will let me follow them without delay?
For this life has grown bitter in taste since they departed.

خليلاًa friend عَلَىin البلوىadversity يقاسمنيshares with me سهماa portion
I cast my gaze about; since losing them, I see no
friend to share my lot in adversity.
أَرىI consider الصبرَpatience عنover the loss of عثمانUthman خفراًa breach of faith لعهدِهof his covenant
كأَنيas though I were إذاwhenever حاوَلتهI attempted it كاسبٌearning إثماa sin
I deem patience at Uthman's loss a breach of faith with him,
as though, whenever I attempted it, I were committing a sin.

عزيزa dear one غزاهassailed him الدهرُTime فاقتادهand so led him away رغماby force
I would ransom with my life, my family, and all my hand possesses
a dear one whom Time assailed and led away by force.
رأيتُI have seen اللياليthe nights لاnot تجودُare generous بمثلِهwith his like
وكيفand how وقَدْwhen already أصبحنَthey have become عنof مثلِهhis like عقماbarren
I have seen the nights bestow no one like him;
and how could they, when they have grown barren of his like?
