أيصبرcan he endure? متبولُlove-stricken الفؤادِthe heart كثيبُgrief-stricken (reading كئيب)
وَترحالهwhile his departure عمنfrom those whom يخبُّhe loves (reading يحبّ) قريبُis near
Can one, lovesick at heart and grief-stricken, endure,
when his departure from those he loves is near?

Nor is human anguish at the moment of parting
strange; rather, forgetting one's love is strange.

What, then, of one whose mounts have set forth at dusk
toward a place where he will always be a stranger?

The hour for night travel has come; yet an hour's delay
to pay farewell its due is a duty.

Forgive me, then, if tears flow,
and the heart leaps in dread of separation.

Oh, that moment—how tremendous its terror!
At it, even the heart of lifeless matter would almost melt.

My two children clung to me a moment, both of them;
each with a moan that pierced my inmost heart, and sobs.

Their weeping revealed what they kept within,
and my tears answered what they asked.

O neighbors, I left my heart as a pledge
to their affection, even should hearts neglect it.

even if Death tears me asunder in my passion.

upon her cheeks, while tears streamed down:

من القلب قرْحاً سال فهو رغيب
By your Lord, do not tomorrow, with parting's wound, reopen
a wound within the heart that bleeds and gapes wide.

For how could it endure longing and sorrow,
and parting's distance—a soul that yearns for you?

I said, while the fires of anguish in my breast
blazed with the rising of my sighs:

Take my hand: what you have said is the very focus
of my pain; from it, pain melts within the heart.

My soul desires to draw near, even were I hated;
how much more, when I have a share of your affection?

No home proved inhospitable to me, nor any dwelling unkind,

And these tears of mine upon your hands are a knot of remembrance;
your palm is drenched and dyed with them.

As though the homeland were a watering place, and my friends outside it
gazed toward it like spent camels circling in thirst.

I say, having seen parting's conveyance,
whose caw announces separation from those I love:

Halt with me, if only long enough to wind a waistcloth, for this
is a convulsion of a soul that can scarcely recover.
