طيفٌa phantom لِلَمياءَof Lamya ماnot ينفكُّceases يبعثُsends ليto me
منfrom آخرِthe last part of الليلthe night إنْif هوّمتI doze أشجاناsorrows
A phantom of Lamya never ceases sending me
A phantom that does not cease to invoke for me
Sorrows in the last hours of night, whenever I doze.
From the late night, if I was troubled by sorrows
يغريdraws الدموعَtears بأجفانٍto eyelids مسهّدةٍsleepless
منfrom حيثwhere يُوريkindles عَلىupon الأحشاءthe innermost parts نيراناfires
It draws tears to my sleepless eyelids,
It makes tears tempting with relaxed eyelids
Even as it kindles fires within my breast.
Wherever it shows upon the intestines fires
فلمso did not ترانيyou see me وَأمرُwhile the state الليلِof night مجتمعٌwas gathered
مشتتscattered الرأيِin thought إثرَin the wake of الطيفِthe phantom حيراناbewildered
You did not see me, with night gathered thick,
You did not see me and the night matter assembled
Scattered in thought, bewildered in the phantom's wake.
My opinion scattered after the phantom, confused
حسبتنيyou thought me مُطْفِلاًa mother with young قدhad ضلّstrayed واحدُهاher only offspring
عنهاfrom her فطبَّقتِso she filled الآفاقَthe horizons تحتاناlamentation (reading uncertain)
You would have thought me a mother whose only child had strayed
You thought I was an intruder who went astray
From her, so she filled the horizons with [lamentation].
From it so you folded the horizons under us
قدindeed كانwas صبريmy patience وَفياًfaithful إنْif فزعتI turned لهto it
عندin الشدائدِhardships لكنْbut فيin الهوىlove خاناbetrayed
My patience had been faithful when I turned to it
My patience would have been faithful if I was alarmed by it
In hardship, but in love it betrayed me.
In hardships, but in passion it failed
فماso what انتفاعيis my benefit بهfrom it إنْif عزّis hard to obtain نائلُهits bounty

What use is it to me if its help is hard to obtain
So my attainment of it is no use if its attainer
Before her, beside whom everything else is slight?
Became inaccessible, everything else seemed lowly
ياO أَنَّةًa sigh عندat إدبارِthe retreat of النجومthe stars حدتْdrove forth
منfrom المدامعِthe eyes ثجَّاجاًa pouring torrent وَهتّاناand steady rain
O sigh that, as the stars withdrew, drew forth
O Anah, when the stars receded
From the eyes a torrent and a steady rain!
Tears streamed from my eyes, bewildered and infatuated

وَلوand even if تمرُّit passes علىover قاسيhard الصفاsmooth rock لاناwould soften
It reached Lamya's ear to intercede for me;
It passed by the hearing of Lamiya to intercede for me
Had it passed over hard stone, the stone would have softened.
If only it would pass by one with a heart of stone, it would soften

فكيفthen how حاليis my condition إذاwhen وَقتthe time النوىof separation حاناcomes
I almost die of longing while one dwelling still unites us;
I almost fulfill my passion while the house is crowded
How then shall I fare when the hour of separation comes?
So what is my state when the time of tryst comes
وَليلةٍand a night منamong لياليthe nights الوصلِof union صالحةٍfair

And a fair night among the nights of union—
And a night of the nights of union suitable
Our thoughts and whispered confidences remained chaste within it.
Our consciences chastened therein and our entities

We spent the night on the slope, while darkness pitched
We stayed on the lowland and the darkness is prevalent
Its tent ropes and corner-posts over the hills.
On the slopes, striking tents and poles

But for the gleam of her front teeth, I could not have found
If not for the shine of the dunes I would not have been guided
Watering places that quenched a thirst-maddened man with sips.
To the watering places I arrived at, overflowing with drink

She pitied my lament as I pitied hers,
She sympathizes for my complaint when I grieve for her complaint
And the star above us pitied our lament.
And the star above sympathizes for both our grievances

Nothing troubled me but sighs that, when they parted
I was not heedful except to moans, whenever they separate
From her heart, brought sorrows to my own.
From her heart they arrive at my heart as sorrows

I tried to lift the shadows of her anguish,
I tried to reveal some of her clouds' shadows
That made her taste sorrow's choking pangs in many forms.
To let her taste the fruits of sorrows in their different colors

I left no incantation or charm handed down
I did not mention a single spell or charm I was told
Without invoking it over her, in secret and openly.
Except I cast it for her secretly and openly
فبعدso after لأيٍmuch effort بداit became clear ليto me أنَّthat ماwhat منيتْshe was afflicted

So, after much effort, I saw that what afflicted her
So which would seem to me that I wished with it
Was her remembrance of kin and homelands.
To remind her of family and homeland

She remembered her people, the sons of Ya'rub, when
She remembered her people the children of Ya'rab when
They were the mightiest kings on earth in sovereign power.
They were the proudest kings to hold power

They ruled the kingdoms from India to al-Andalus,
They ruled kingdoms from India to Al-Andalus
Establishing justice and benevolence within them.
Establishing among them justice and benevolence

روضُthe garden الأمانيِّof hopes بعدafter الجدْبِdrought فيْناناlush with spreading boughs
Then she let tears flow, whose downpour made
So the meadow of wishes became, after barrenness
The garden of hopes luxuriant after drought.
With the drops of her tears, a blossoming verdant garden

She said, "I knew the first ancestors planting their roots
To the foremost chiefs of Qays and Qahtan,
To the far branched descendants of Qais and Qahtan

From every valiant and honored tribe
Who never submits to oppression, wherever he may be.

It has been their nature since the days of Ya'rub
Prestigious among them since the era of Ya'rab
To refuse all acquiescence or submission to humiliation.
To refuse disgrace eternally and indefinitely

So why does not fate make their opinion right
That some of them sometimes stray in their views?
Though some of them sometimes err in view

Inform the people about Lamiya, a queen

Whom the nobles and commons equally adored

Our souls were not freed from Turkish fetters
Our souls were not freed from the shackles of the Turks
For us to become slaves to others than the Turks.
Until we remain slaves, not owned by the Turks

Blood of the chaste spilled and souls

In Sinai's plain or Lebanon's rugged terrain.
In the Sinai plains or in the sorrow of Lebanon
