Yours is the most auspicious rising in the constellations of glory,

Guiding aright and dispelling every darkness.

The heaven of lofty honors has raised you as a star,

On Egypt's brow, shining amid the nation.

Thus you became a valiant, exalted man in this world,

In the mighty one's presence, unassailable through honor.

Above the heads, your reed pen appeared upright,

Dictating every truth from the heights.

Drunk, it darts above the page in flight,

Yet its drunkenness comes from wisdom's wine.

Where is Ibn Muqla? Had he seen its movements,

He would have become eyeless in his astonishment.

Egypt rejoiced in the Nile's flood and grew radiant

With your pure kindness encircling it like the deep sea.

Bodies are refreshed by water; yet it is only

Through the outpouring of that tenderness that you revive souls.

O countenance that shines for goodness in the assembly,

O delight of virtue, reviving my heart!

I cannot give thanks their due whenever

The mountains of beneficence tower beyond my weakness.

I came to your side as a visitor, so you granted me

Forbearance that clothes me in the noblest robe.
