You are perfection, true to your name, O Kamal.

How, then, can words now praise you?

Dignity crowns you, and you are a crown

For the heights, and majesty accompanies you.

I have seen you in the heights, a polished sword,

With whose steel men have adorned themselves.

You wrestled with time until it became a slave

At your command, submissive and obedient.

Great victory is yours, with every honor,

Whenever a contest or debate is joined.

Whenever glory roams in search of someone

In whom to seek refuge, you are its destination.

Every praiseworthy quality is linked to you,

And no virtue is parted from you.

Learning called on you to revive it with expertise,

So you occupy yourself with nothing but learning.

I have seen you as a sea of bounty for knowledge,

From which pure water overflows upon the people.

And the lamp of civilization for humankind

Appeared in your hands, revealed by its blaze.

You burned ignorance in it; you shine as a light by which

Rashness and error were wiped away.

In your presence, the springs of refinement overflowed,

So drinking from them grew sweet for the world.

    إِذا ما صالَ نُكِّستِ النِصالُ

    Your reed pen, O gallant one, is a sword of truth;

Whenever it charges, blades are lowered.

The people fell in love with the whiteness of a sheet

That it blackens, just as beauty is loved.

So it intoxicates them, but with an intoxication of wisdom,

And enchants them, yet the spell upon them is lawful.

At the gate of your eminence, I have awaited a dawn

Of hopes, with bounty following in its wake.

I see in you an inborn love of people's welfare,

And it is with one like you that men seek refuge.
