Put on the face veil, let down the wrap, and conceal yourself.
Veil your beauty, don your robes, conceal yourself,
And veil the marvels that dazzle hearing and sight.
And hide those allurements of hearing and sight.

If you veil your face, its rays remain unveiled,
Though you veil your face, its radiance beams still;
And the eye knows an eye's beauty by its trace.
The eye knows the beauty of the eye at a glance.

Come, wander afar and flee me with haste,
And turn your ears from mention of me and news of me.
Deafen your ear to my words and my tale.

Lower your glances from me and turn away in disdain
Avert your eyes from me; disdain me now;
From me; pity neither my tears nor my sleeplessness.
Spare no thought for my tears or my vigil.

Ask not after my bonds that are loosed and lost;
Nor loosen my bonds to spare me captivity's torment.
Seek not to free my reins from affliction's grasp.

Forget my affection, and do not pity my wretchedness,
Forget my love and heed not my misery;
And care neither for my torment nor my sleeplessness.
Reck not my torment nor loss of repose.

Rend now my heart so I feel no regret—
For it, O my heart's wish, O utmost goal of my desire.
O my wish and my goal and my quest's end!

But do what you will, I'll not waver at all
In loving you; I turn toward no other mortal.
From loving you, nor will I mankind appraise.

On land, at sea, in travel, and in settled life.
On the land, on the sea, on all trodden paths.

I will roam though borne aloft on a bier,
I go forth at dawn, even if hurled into sparks.
Dash on though driven into the fiery rain.

My ardor, my anguish, and my life in danger's hand.
Of my passion, my soul facing danger's tide.

Entitled to triumph after my earnest striving in love.
After my struggle deserving of victory.

Of what use is the beauty's composed inaction
A ship amid winds and deep waters.
But a lure to mishaps, like ships in the storm?

And this night will give way to dawn.
And this night unveil its enchanting display.

Who all but seizes his trophy from Fortune's palm.

Except worship in one sincerely pure.
Of the devout before God's immaculate shrine.

Those who love have witnessed I stand alone,
That he is peerless among the lovers of this age.
A marvel of lovers in this modern age.

Like flame visible in the darkness of night.
Like the flames of night clear to the onlooker's eye.

Though overcome, maddened by love, I feel no fright;
Alas, if only I were not defeated in it!
Ah, if only my strength had not failed me here!

Have I sought the soul's dislike for the form.
The soul's displeasure, inevitably, by desire for outward forms.

To bind the gazelle for the hunter and the bowstring.

Ever tossed between purity and foul morass.
Forever tossed between serenity and distress.

My lifetime was lost, and I obtained no fruit.

Not in mist - nay, but in light and sparks.
Not in mist, but in light and sparks.

While my heart danced between the lute and its strings.

To her charm, which unfurled the flag of conquest.
Before her beauty, as it unfurled the banner of victory.

Despite hostile fortunes my wish that day.
Attained my desire from her, despite my enemies.

A day when the cups went round, playing
With spirits and images wrought round their rims.
With souls and bodies beyond what ardent longing could.

She turned angrily upon the wine, since it had been likened
To her sober friend's refreshing perfume.
By her drinking companion to her refreshing, fragrant dark lips.
She stamped in anger on the wine cups,
داسَتshe trampled بِأَقدامِهاwith her feet كاساتِهِhis cups حَنقاًin fury
كَالبَدرlike the full moon داسَtrampling جَبينthe brow of الأَنجُمِthe stars الزُهرِbright
She trampled his cups with her feet in fury,
Like the full moon stomping the small stars.
Like the full moon trampling the brows of bright stars.
So I was left deprived at midday, the sun tripped
فَخِلتُso I imagined شَمسthe sun of الضُحىlate morning بِالنجمupon a star قَدhad عثرتstumbled
حَتّىuntil ظَنَنتُI thought نِظامَthe order of الكَونِthe universe فيin خَطَرِdanger
I thought the morning sun had stumbled upon a star,
Till I thought the cosmos itself endangered.
Until I thought the universe's order was in danger.
Like a shy gazelle she rose and fled from me
وَاِستَنهَضَتand she sprang up كَغَزالlike a gazelle of القَفرthe wilderness شارِدَةًfleeing
عَنيaway from me وَقَدhaving أَنكَرتَresented نَحوَtoward السِوىanother نَظَريmy glance
She sprang up, fleeing like a wilderness gazelle,
In aversion, refusing to glance my way.
Away from me, having resented my glance toward another.
Then blind jealousy rose in an iron clump
وَهَبَّتand surged الغيرةjealousy العَمياءblind فيin كَبدٍa liver
مِنof الحَديدiron عَلىagainst قَلبٍa heart مِنof الحَجَرِstone
And blind jealousy surged within a liver
Of a heart cold as stone and abandoned me -
Of iron, against a heart of stone.
Vanquished by her love, weeping, complaining,
وَفارَقَتنيand she left me صَريعاًstricken فيin مَحبتهاlove for her
أَبكيI weep وَأَشكوand complain وَأمريwhile my plight غَيرnot مُستترِconcealed
And she left me stricken by my love for her,
My plight exposed and my secret no more.
Weeping and complaining, my plight unconcealed.
