    Is it your face's radiance that has shone forth in the darkness,

    Or has your phantom come, stealing through the night?

    Do I meet you awake, among the white antelopes,

    Or is that a dream arisen in the folds of sleep?

    No, no! I see you, see you—you are real!

    And I—I am the ardent lover, tormented among mortals.

    هَذا زَفيري بِالفُؤادِ تَسَعرا

    Here is your beauty, rising in its majesty;

    Here is my sigh, blazing within my heart.

    Here is my blood, stirred up and boiling in my breast

    With longing; and here are my hot tears streaming down.

    These are your eyes; their glances have wooed

    My eye, which answers them in a secret exchange.

    كَيفَ اِحتِيالي وَالرَقيب تَجَبَّرا

    These are your hands, yet there is no way to touch them;

    What can I contrive, when the watcher has grown overbearing?

    Should I, deluded, doubt your existence, when

    Eyes stare, bewildered, at your rising?

    I am that blind man whose eyes have beheld

    My full moon shining forth this very day.

    أَبَداً أَقيمُ الدَهرَ لَن أَتَغَيَّرا

    I am that long-devoted slave, steadfast in loyalty;

    Forever I remain, through all time; I shall not change.

    How could I turn from passion, from love,

    When I was suckled on your love as a little child?

    I still love its depths, in which

    So often I have recklessly drowned.

    In my passion I do not retreat from the blaze

    That has so often burned my heart, fiercely kindled.

    I am yours alone, O queen of my soul:

    A true endowment, neither sold nor bought.

    وَمُصيبة المَحزونِ أَن يَتذكَرا

    Only the memory of bygone days delights me;

    And the sorrowing one's affliction is to remember.

    My good fortune has passed; fate has dealt ill with my lot.

    My life is spent; my resolve has weakened and shattered.

    O blossom of the gathering, before whose splendor

    The garden's flowers bow their heads toward the earth in shame.

    What is the morning rose, crowned by the dew,

    Beside your cheek when it burns crimson?

    What is the languid narcissus, with its downcast glances,

    But a hint of your gaze, which takes all mortals captive?

    Be gentle with the jasmine blossom, for it,

    Once white, now looks yellow in your palm.

    You have no need of its fragrant wafts,

    While your own fragrance breathes ambergris through the worlds.

    O my heart's desire, will you grant a visit,

    Through which the lovesick sufferer revives in triumph?

    Can I behold your swaying form,

    Like a flowering branch in the garden of beauty?

    Shall I hear the words of your mouth saying to me:

    “Are you, after our parting, still alive and seeing?”

    Shall I ever be able to touch your wrist, which

    I find has taken shape from sheets of silver?

    العلهُ بَعدَ البُعاد تَغَيّرا

    I have known your heart to soften at my plight;

    Has it perhaps changed after our separation?

    Grant my wish, O my life, and consent

    To heal my heart; what has befallen me is enough.

    وَدَعي أَحاديث الكَلام المُفتَري

    And trust my pledge: your beloved is true;

    And dismiss the tales of slanderous talk.

    And take command of me, and proclaim before the throng:

    “This is my beloved, settled within my protection.”

    And let all the women of the earth, my soul,

    Beat the water's face until it grows numb.
