Your third year has arrived, O my prince.

You have not died; you live in my inmost soul.

I do not forget—how could I ever forget

My companion, my beloved, and my defender?

How could I forget his tenderness or his charm,

Or the cheerful smiles of his radiant face?

How could I forget that boldness when

The brave drew back from a perilous undertaking?

How could I forget the force of firmness when

It was joined with resolve in that great heart?

How could I forget the bounty of that sought-out giver,

And the sweet forbearance of that mighty man?

There was no prince like him in the East,

Who turned might into gentleness and goodness.

    هَيْبةٌ كاللَّيْثِ لُطْفٌ كَالعبِيرِ

    A stature like a spear, a face like morning brightness;

Majesty like a lion's, gentleness like perfume.

What he was building for his future was

The best a discerning man could build for his destiny.

Ah, had he been granted another year after

He had laid the groundwork in his final year,

His people would have witnessed, through his benevolence,

A greatness in giving beyond compare.

An aspiration for good, thwarted by

Death's cruelty toward the poor people.

If he fell short of it against his will, indeed

Great was what he gave in his brief life.

Who will excuse me? I weep, and not

Every lost one is like this one—who will excuse me?

Lament, when healing is hard to find, is but

The last solace for one whose heart is broken.
