Your plantings have smiled, revealing tomorrow's first fruits,

And the first signs of guidance have appeared to those who seek it.

The world renews itself; whoever wishes within it

To reach his goals must renew himself.

You have acted justly, O Nur al-Huda, and for a wise purpose

You have kindled the flame of your ardent resolve.

What a fine model your supreme example is for anyone

Who follows you in leadership and discernment!

Yours is the loveliest portrait in the book of the age,

It has endured; nothing but virtue is made immortal.

How many favors your people owe you! Not even

Kissing your hand, were it allowed, could thank you enough.

Time has known a few of them; many of them

Have lain beyond its hearing or its sight.

One alone suffices for your pride: that we should discover

Among them the building of this institute.

Our women's union is a blessing from God,

While men are like scattered quicksilver.

They emulated the stringing of their necklaces, while

Their husbands sundered little fingers never linked.

This is no occasion for fault-finding, though

A critic's tongue may call people toward what is best.

How beautiful this harmony, and how gracious what

It offers in guidance to those who seek it!

Give the age of progress glad tidings of it, for

The more noble deeds it asks of this union, the more it gains.

Blessed are you, O age of progress, and blessed are

The women occupying the foremost seats in this assembly.

They are the age-mates who have surpassed in learning

Their sisters among the fair, modest maidens,

Who conquer the hearts of lovers of reason

    With virtue, not with a straightened spear or an Indian sword;

Who find adornments of the spirit enough,

Without pearls upon their throats or gold.

Among them is one who soars on wings, while

    The earth has become a prison for those not borne aloft;

And a champion of rights-holders, who safeguards their rights

    Against whoever attacks those rights and transgresses;

And a woman physician who heals without harshness; for from

    Her hand the blade glides like a kohl-stick;

And a woman of letters who has reached the full extent of her aim

In knowledge, whether newly acquired or inherited.

Her chastity heightened her readiness for the fray,

And by no other bond was she bound.

Nine women stepped forward from the ranks, leaving

For the women who follow, a course of earnest striving, made smooth.

They rivaled the homeland's young men, and reached what

They reach; knowledge is the most generous watering-place.

How fine is competition, when its aims are rightful!

For it is the path to the heights and eminence,

And it lifts up every stumbling nation,

And bestows honor on every mighty nation.
