واسم به عوذت يا توفيق

Your noble qualities and virtues did not avail you,

Neither your features nor virtues could save you,

Nor the name invoked to shield you, O Tawfiq.

O Tawfiq, the name in which I sought refuge.

بل شاء ربك أن تفوز بقربه

بل شاء ربك أن تفوز بقربه

عجلا وأخطأ قومك التوفيق

عجلا وأخطأ قومك التوفيق

Rather, your Lord willed that you attain nearness to Him

But your Lord willed you to attain His nearness quickly,

Swiftly, while good fortune eluded your people.

While your people missed attaining harmony.

هل كانت الدنيا مقاما صالحا

هل كانت الدنيا مقاما صالحا

ليطيل فيه مكثه الصديق

ليطيل فيه مكثه الصديق

Was the world a fitting abode

Could the life of this world be an abode of righteousness,

For a true friend to prolong his stay there?

To prolong the stay of a friend in it?

فادخل جنان الخلد

فادخل جنان الخلد

وامرح ناجيا من محبس الدنيا فأنت طليق

وامرح ناجيا من محبس الدنيا فأنت طليق

So enter the gardens of eternity,

So enter the Gardens of Eternity,

And rejoice, delivered from the world's prison, for you are free.

And frolic happily, released from the prison of life as you are free.

اليوم تنفعك المبرات التي

اليوم تنفعك المبرات التي

أسلفتها وبها الثواب خليق

أسلفتها وبها الثواب خليق

Today you benefit from the acts of kindness that

Today the good deeds you forwarded benefit you,

You sent ahead; fitting reward is their due.

And through them the reward is guaranteed.

أما إقامتك القصيرة بيننا

أما إقامتك القصيرة بيننا

فتدوم ذكرانا لها وتشوق

فتدوم ذكرانا لها وتشوق

As for your brief sojourn among us,

As for your brief stay amongst us,

Our remembrance of it and our longing will endure.

It keeps our remembrance of you alive, and stirs yearning.

وأحب ما يبقى لخدن راحل

وأحب ما يبقى لخدن راحل

عهد وإن سط المزار وثيق

عهد وإن سط المزار وثيق

And the dearest thing left to a departed companion

The dearest thing that remains with one who has departed,

Is a steadfast bond, though the place of visitation lies far away.

Is a pact, though the tombstone be smooth.

كم بات ملتاع تسح دموعه

كم بات ملتاع تسح دموعه

حزنا عليك وفي حشاه حروق

حزنا عليك وفي حشاه حروق

How many a grief-stricken soul spent the night with tears pouring down,

Many a cheerful night that your tears graced,

In sorrow for you, with burning anguish in his heart:

Grieving for you, with burning embers inside.

عرس مدلهة وأم ثاكل

عرس مدلهة وأم ثاكل

وشقيقة محزونة وشقيق

وشقيقة محزونة وشقيق

A distraught wife and a bereaved mother,

A bride in mourning, a bereft mother,

And a grieving sister and a brother.

A grieving sister, and a brother.

وأباعد جزعوا عليك ولم يكن

وأباعد جزعوا عليك ولم يكن

لك بينهم إلا أخ وصديق

لك بينهم إلا أخ وصديق

And strangers grieved for you; you had

Your family was distraught over losing you,

None among them but brothers and friends.

Though you were no more than a brother and friend to them.

يا كوكبا سلب العيون ضياءها

يا كوكبا سلب العيون ضياءها

عجب غروبك والأوان شروق

عجب غروبك والأوان شروق

O star that robbed the eyes of their light,

O star that deprived eyes of their light!

How strange your setting at the hour of rising!

Wondrous is your setting while still time to rise!

أوثت أسرتك الوفية حسرة

أوثت أسرتك الوفية حسرة

راعت بقسوتها وأنت رفيق

راعت بقسوتها وأنت رفيق

You bequeathed to your faithful family a grief

Your faithful family laments sorrowfully,

That appalled with its harshness, though you were gentle.

Shocked by its harshness while you were gentle.

هي أسرة بك زيد طارف مجدها

هي أسرة بك زيد طارف مجدها

والمجد فيها تالد وعريق

والمجد فيها تالد وعريق

It is a family whose new-won glory grew through you,

Through you the flowing glory of your family increased,

And whose glory is ancestral and deep-rooted.

And glory in it is ingrained and time-honored.

فتيانها من خير فتيان الحمى

فتيانها من خير فتيان الحمى

وعلى مثالك كلهم موموق

وعلى مثالك كلهم موموق

Its young men are among the homeland's finest,

Its youth are the best of the protectors’ youth,

And, like you, they are all beloved.

And all of them, like you, are kept under watch.

فليسلموا لبلادهم فلقد غدا

فليسلموا لبلادهم فلقد غدا

علم المناقب باسمهم معتوق

علم المناقب باسمهم معتوق

May they be kept safe for their country, for now

So may they be entrusted with caring for their land,

The banner of noble deeds is unfettered in their name.

For the standard of virtues has been raised in their name.
