You have given a gift, and the gift is precious.

    God bless you, O Amin!

    How exquisite the edifying words—

within them are many arts of letters!

In them are the ornate and the refined,

    the veiled and the clear.

In them is the familiar, without banality,

and the unfamiliar, and what safeguards.

    Insights appeared, strutting proudly in

eloquent phrases whose beauties are eyes.

They were led forth as brides, and borne swiftly to

    our minds by stately words.

Lebanon spoke to us, and we were swayed

    by remembrance and longing,

with tales of its enchantment; indeed,

talk of Lebanon is full of sorrows.

What does the rose say within

it, and what does the jasmine say?

    What do its fruits say,

as the unborn fruit follows the ripe among them?

    What does its sky say,

    and its life-giving, tender breeze?

What do they say to those who hear

    their melodies—those nests?

What do the great trees say, living

on, immortal, while centuries have passed?

What does the most fearful one say—the

    trembling one—and the steadfast mountain?

What does the countryside say, enfolded

    in simplicity and stillness?

    And nature, whose beauty

    has allure in every corner?

    What importance keen insight has

    where matters become confused!

    Secrets may be discerned,

too subtle for conjecture to see.

And it passes through the gravity of

    events, at its most playful.

Thus it fashions the most eloquent wisdom,

and in it are jest and ribaldry.

Spontaneous stirrings of thought, whose inspiration

guides, and whose writer is Amin.
