أَصْبَحْتَyou have become مَطراناًa metropolitan bishop وَأَنتَand you are الْخوريthe priest (Khoury)
أَصْبَحْتَ مَطراناً وَأَنتَ الْخوري
وَالصِّفَتانِand both titles مَصْدَرٌa source لِلنُّورِof light
وَالصِّفَتانِ مَصْدَرٌ لِلنُّورِ
You have become a metropolitan bishop, yet remain the priest;
And both titles are a source of light.
كُنتَyou were أَباa father of بِرِّvirtue تَفانىdevoted himself wholly فِيto التُّقىpiety
كُنتَ أَبا بِرِّ تَفانى فِي التُّقى
وَمَاand did not وَنىfalter عَنin عَمَلٍa deed مَبْرورrighteous
وَمَا وَنى عَن عَمَلٍ مَبْرور
You were a father of virtue, wholly devoted to piety,
And never faltered in any righteous work.
وَكُنتَand you were فِيin الدَّيْرِthe monastery رَئِيساًa superior لَمْdid not يَدَعْleave
وَكُنتَ فِي الدَّيْرِ رَئِيساً لَمْ يَدَعْ
فِيin الدَّيْرِthe monastery غَيْرَanything but الأَثرِthe legacy المَأْثورcherished
فِي الدَّيْرِ غَيْرَ الأَثرِ المَأْثور
And in the monastery you were a superior who left
Nothing in the monastery but a cherished legacy.
يَاO أَيُّهَاyou الرَّاعيthe shepherd الَّذِيwho رُقِيُّهُhis elevation
يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّاعي الَّذِي رُقِيُّهُ
قدْindeed غَمَرَflooded الْقلوبَthe hearts بِالْحُبُورِwith joy
قدْ غَمَرَ الْقلوبَ بِالْحُبُورِ
O shepherd, whose elevation
Has flooded hearts with joy,
عِيدُthe feast of البَشَارَةِthe Annunciation إِغْتَدَىbecame عِيدَيْنِtwo feasts فيin
عِيدُ البَشَارَةِ إِغْتَدَى عِيدَيْنِ في
يَوْمِone day فَثَنَّىthus doubling آيَةَthe sign of الْبَشِيرِthe herald
يَوْمِ فَثَنَّى آيَةَ الْبَشِيرِ
The Feast of the Annunciation has become two feasts in
One day, thus doubling the herald's sign.
للهِhow splendid! حَفْلٌa gathering ضمbrought together أَسْمَىthe noblest نُخْبَةٍselect company
للهِ حَفْلٌ ضم أَسْمَى نُخْبَةٍ
مِنْfrom among وُزَرَاءِthe ministers اللهِof God وَالجُّمْهُورِand the people
مِنْ وُزَرَاءِ اللهِ وَالجُّمْهُورِ
What a splendid gathering, uniting the noblest company
Of ministers of God and the people!
بَدَتْappeared بِهِwithin it مَلاَئِكangels تُقِلُّهَاbear them aloft
بَدَتْ بِهِ مَلاَئِك تُقِلُّهَا
أَجْنِحَةُwings التَّسْبِيحِof praise وَالبَخُّورِand incense
أَجْنِحَةُ التَّسْبِيحِ وَالبَخُّورِ
Angels appeared there, borne aloft by
Wings of praise and incense.
وَبَرَقتْand shone أَسِرةُthe features الْوُجُوهِof faces عَنrevealing
وَبَرَقتْ أَسِرةُ الْوُجُوهِ عَن
سَرائِرَinmost feelings تَفِيضُoverflowing بِالسُّرُورِwith joy
سَرائِرَ تَفِيضُ بِالسُّرُورِ
And faces shone, revealing
Inmost feelings overflowing with joy.
يُهْنِئُكَmay it bring you joy التَّاجُthe crown السَّنِيُّradiant مِنْfrom يَدَيءthe hands of
يُهْنِئُكَ التَّاجُ السَّنِيُّ مِنْ يَدَيء
بَطْرِيقِناour patriarch كِيرَلُّلسCyril الكبِيرِthe great
بَطْرِيقِنا كِيرَلُّلس الكبِيرِ
May you enjoy the radiant crown from the hands of
Our great Patriarch Cyril.
أَتْمِمْcomplete حَلاَهُits beauty بِحُلَىwith the adornments of لاَبِسِهِits wearer
أَتْمِمْ حَلاَهُ بِحُلَى لاَبِسِهِ
مِنْof حِكْمَةٍwisdom وَرَحْمَةٍand mercy وَخَيْرِand goodness
مِنْ حِكْمَةٍ وَرَحْمَةٍ وَخَيْرِ
Complete its beauty with the adornments of its wearer,
Of wisdom, mercy, and goodness.
وَاسْتَقْبِلِand welcome الأَيَّامَthe days وَامْلُكْand take command of رَاشِداًrightly guided
وَاسْتَقْبِلِ الأَيَّامَ وَامْلُكْ رَاشِداً
زِمَامَهَاtheir reins بِعَزْمِكَwith your resolve الْمُوْفُورِabundant
زِمَامَهَا بِعَزْمِكَ الْمُوْفُورِ
And welcome the days, and wisely grasp
Their reins with your abundant resolve.
حَاجَتُنَاour need إِلىfor الْهدَىguidance قَدْindeed بَلَغَتْhas reached
حَاجَتُنَا إِلى الْهدَى قَدْ بَلَغَتْ
غَايَتَهَاits utmost extent فِيin الزَّمَنِthe times الأَخِيرِrecent
غَايَتَهَا فِي الزَّمَنِ الأَخِيرِ
Our need for guidance has reached
Its utmost in these latter days.
وَنِيطَand was laid بِالرُّعَاةِupon the shepherds كُلُّevery مَطْلَبِdemand
وَنِيطَ بِالرُّعَاةِ كُلُّ مَطْلَبِ
لَيْسَis not أَدَاؤُهits fulfillment مِنَamong الْيَسِيرِeasy things
لَيْسَ أَدَاؤُه مِنَ الْيَسِيرِ
And upon the shepherds is laid every demand
Whose fulfillment is no easy matter.
فَلاَso may not عِدَتُّكَfail you دُونَin facing مَاwhat حَمَلْتَهُyou have shouldered it
فَلاَ عِدَتُّكَ دُونَ مَا حَمَلْتَهُ
مَعُونَةًhelp مِنْfrom رَبِّكَyour Lord الْقَدِيرِthe Almighty
مَعُونَةً مِنْ رَبِّكَ الْقَدِيرِ
So may you never lack, in what you have undertaken,
Help from your almighty Lord.
