مَاذَاwhat يُعَانِيsuffers فِيin الْهَوَىlove أَهْلُthe people of الْهَوىlove
مِنْof سَفْكِthe shedding of دَمْعٍtears وَاحْتِرَاقِand the burning of صُدُورِbreasts
What lovers suffer in love—
What do the lovers suffer in passion
Tears poured out and breasts aflame!
Of shedding tears and burning inside
فِيin الحَيِّthe encampment أَعْرَابِيَّةa Bedouin woman هَدَرَتْshed with impunity دَماًblood
لَوْلاَbut for الْهَوَىlove مَاnot كَانَwould have been بِالْمَهْدُورِunavenged
In the camp, a Bedouin maiden shed blood with impunity,
In the living quarters, a Bedouin woman shed blood
Blood that, but for love, would not have gone unavenged.
If not for passion, she wouldn’t have been ruined
حسْنَاءُa beautiful woman تَخْطُرwalks with a sway بَيْنَamong أَبْيَاتِthe tents of الحِمَىthe protected grounds

A beauty, she sways among the tents of the protected grounds,
A beauty wanders amid the abodes of love
With an eye's tender motions and the sway of dark-eyed maidens,
Glances of an eye, in affection and houri
بِدَلاَلِwith the coy grace of غُصْنٍa bough فِيin حُلَىthe adornments of نَوَّارِهits blossoms
وَجَمَالِand the beauty of شَمْسٍa sun فِيin غِلاَلَةa veil of نُورِlight
With the coy grace of a bough adorned in its blossoms,
With the coquetry of a branch in the adornments of blossoms
And the beauty of a sun in a veil of light.
And the beauty of a sun amid the shades of light
وَشَتِinformed maliciously الْعَوَاذِلُthe reproachers بِيagainst me فَحَالَتْand so barred the way دُونَهَاto her
وَقَضَتْand decreed حُكُومَةُthe tribunal of أَهْلِهَاher people بِثُبُورِيfor my ruin
The reproachers informed against me and barred me from her,
The maidens blamed me, so they prevented me
And her people's tribunal decreed my ruin.
And their people’s rule decreed my loss
ظَلَمُواthey wronged وَمَاand no بِيin me رِيبةُcause for suspicion وَتَعَاقَبَتْand came in succession
طَعْنَاتُهُمْtheir stabs فِيin قَلْبِيَmy heart المَفْطُورِthe broken
They wronged me, though I gave no cause for suspicion, and in succession came
They wronged me, and I was blameless, and their
Their stabs into my broken heart.
Stabs succeeded in my broken heart
لَوْif كَفَّheld back هَذَاthis الدَّهْرُage عَنِّيfrom me غَرْبَهُits sharp edge
وَرَثَىand took pity لِحَالِon the plight of العَاشِقِthe lover المَهْجُورِthe forsaken
If this age would spare me its sharp edge,
If only this fate would stop troubling me
And pity the plight of the forsaken lover,
And would lament the state of the abandoned lover
لَشَفَىwould surely quench غَلِيلَthe burning thirst of المُسْتَهامِthe lovesick one بِقُرْبِهَاthrough nearness to her
وَشفَىand would heal جِرَاحَthe wounds of النَّاقِمِthe resentful one المَوْتُورِthe wronged one
It would quench the lovesick one's burning thirst through nearness to her,
It would heal the resentment of the passionate
And heal the wounds of the resentful, wronged man.
And cure the wounds of the resentful, broken one
