What does poetry want of me?

My advancing years have laid it waste.

Did it ever exist—what the days carried away

of my letters and my art?

I cherished good hopes, but the nights

did not live up to my good hopes.

And I returned from a market where I had offered

    my wares at a loss.

    Was that, then, its fault,

or was it mine? Do not ask me.

The fire within me has died down—the fire that

raised my standing in the eyes of the age.

It is a flame that used to stir

my poetic gift and light my mind,

in days when I knew rapture, and my heart

was the seat of the ringing voice.

Do not summon me to great deeds

after that; do not summon me.

O you who burden me with the demands

of youth, be gentle with my frailty.

My time has passed, and so have those

among my friends who filled it with life; leave me be.

    دِي وَانقَضَى عَهْدُ التَّغَنِي

    Spring has gone, and my branch has withered;

the age of singing has ended.

And I have lost the delights of visions,

and I have lost the delights of wishing.

I have brought life to a close in

the valley of imagination—or as though I had.

So if resolve appears to you

in a tireless man who toils and builds,

his excuse is fear of being likened

to a millstone with no grist.

And he toils as bees toil, while they

    strive and gather for others.

I am content that wishes be fulfilled

for others, even if they pass me by.

I yield my place to whoever

    rises to it, without grief.

And indeed I gladly welcome whoever rivals

me, even if he is beneath my arm.

Indeed, the truth, when we reach

it, surely suffices us and enriches us.

In it is grandeur in all its

meaning, and in it is every beauty.

    Legacies are alike in

that we prepare for them and gather possessions.

    So when we depart, will

our names suffice in our place?

If we remain, though the souls have already

    departed, what do names mean?

If remembrance held no benefit for

posterity, it would not stir my longing.

As for reward, I have received

more than my own weight of it.

In the present I have borrowed in advance what

those who come after will say of me.
