أَيُّwhat رُزْءٍcalamity دَهَاكَbefell you يَاO سَمْعَانُSam'an

What calamity has befallen you, O Sam'an?
What grief has stricken you, O Semaan!
Lebanon was shaken by the horror of its blow.
Lebanon is shaken by its impact.
وَتَلَقَّتْand received أَنْبَاءهُits news مِصْرُEgypt وهْناًweakened

And Egypt received its news, stricken,
The news reached Egypt in sorrow,
So she is distraught, with no consolation.
So it is delirious, with no console.
يَعْلَمُknows اللهُGod مَاwhat تَحَمَّلَهُhas borne it آلُكَyour family
فِيin المَرْبَعَيْنِthe two abodes وَالإِخْوَانُand the brethren
God knows what your family has borne
God knows what your family endured
In the two abodes, and your brethren too.
During the forties and with the Brethren.
فَدَحَweighed heavily الأَمْرُthe calamity فِيupon الفَتَىthe young man البَاسِطِoutstretching الكَفِّthe hand
وَفِيand upon العَفِّthe pure one قَلْبُهُhis heart وَاللِّسَانُand the tongue
Grievous was the loss of the open-handed young man,
So leadership fell on the open-handed youth
And of him whose heart and tongue were pure,
With the gentle heart and glib tongue.
فِيin عَزِيزٍa cherished man بَنَىhe built مِنَfrom الجَاهِprestige صَرْحاًa tower

Of a cherished man who built a tower of prestige,
On a dear one who built from prestige a edifice
No edifice could rival his own.
That no other building could rival,
نَالَhe attained مَاwhat شَاءَhe wished مِنْof مُنىًwishes وَتَنَحَّىand withdrew

He attained all he wished, while there withdrew
He attained what he wished and withdrew
From competing on his course, his peers.
From a race while his peers were still running.
ذَاكَthat إِنْif كَانَhe was بِالإِجَادَةِto excellence

That was so, if he was devoted to excellence
That is, if generosity was his way
And generosity, and doing good was his constant practice.
And giving freely his habit and kindness his work
كُلُّevery فِعْلٍdeed لِلْخَيْرِfor good سَاهَمَhe participated فِيهِin it

He took part in every deed for good,
Every act of good he had a share in
And answered those who called, whoever they were.
And answered the calls of petitioners whoever they were

It is no wonder, now he has died, that condolences
It is no wonder the country's elders and notables
Are offered to the country's leaders and notables.
Wished to honor him.
عُدِمُواthey were deprived of رِزْقَهُمْtheir sustenance وَأَقْسَىand harsher عَلَيْهِمْfor them

They have lost their sustenance; harder still for them
When he was gone, they lost their sustenance
Is to lack his kindness and tenderness.
And his kindness that they missed was cruelty to them.
فِيin الزَّمَانِthe time القَرِيبِrecent وَاحَرَّalas, the burning of قَلْباًa heart

In the recent past—ah, how the heart burns!
Just recently, a heart that saw
Where, in the unseen, has that time gone?
Where in the hidden world that time had gone
كَانَthere were قَوْمُpeople أَحَبَّهُمْhe loved them وَأَحَبُّوهُand they loved him

There were people he loved, and who loved him,
There was a people who loved him and whom he loved
And he kept the firm covenant, as did they.
And he kept the solemn pact, and so did they

If calamities befell them of the kind
If they were struck by afflictions—things from which
In which supporters and helpers were scarce,
No ally or helper were immune—
لاnot يَقُولُونَthey say مَنْwho فَتَاهَاits champion وَسَمْعَانُand Sam'an

They would not ask, 'Who is its champion?' with Sam'an
They did not say, “Who has undone them?” For Semaan
Its honored, vigilant champion.
Had undone them, vigilant he was.

Today they are powerless to ransom him; nor
Today they are helpless to offer redemption, and
Have tears and grief served their devotion.
No use in grieving or in anguished lament

Ah! The sorrow poured on the heart
At heart, and the bereaved father!
By the bereaved father and the sons

But the children are the finest recompense
So precious, hoped for by the homelands after him:
Hoped for by homelands after him:

Cultured daughters and sons,
Daughters cultivated and sons—
Like the finest youths that spring forth.
The choicest blooms youth ever sprouted

O you who grieve, be patient, for nothing
O you who mourn, have patience, for nothing
Avails but resignation and submission.
Helps but acquiescence and compliance.
لَكُمُfor you اللهُGod وَهْوَand He خَيْرُthe best وَلِيٍّprotector

You have God, and He is the best protector,
You have God, and He is the best Guardian,
And for him whom fate overtook, the gardens of Paradise.
And for him who met an early fate, Heaven
أَقْرَضَhe lent اللهَGod كُلَّevery قَرْضٍloan جَمِيلٍgoodly

He lent to God every goodly loan,
God requites every good loan manifold,
So the All-Merciful repaid him manyfold.
So the Merciful repaid him double.
