كُفِيَwas provided for المُعْتَفِيthe seeker of bounty وَعَزَّand gained honor الذَّلِيلُthe lowly one
كُفِيَ المُعْتَفِي وَعَزَّ الذَّلِيلُ
Welcome, honored ones, by whose bounty
Welcome, O noble ones, through whose generosity
the suppliant was satisfied and the lowly ennobled.
The seeker of bounty was provided for, and the lowly gained honor.
مَرْحَباًwelcome يَاO عَقَائِلَnoble ladies الطُّهْرِpurity والْبِرِّand beneficence
مَرْحَباً يَا عَقَائِلَ الطُّهْرِ والْبِرِّ
وَمَاand not ضَرَّharmed أَنَّهُنَّthat they are قَلِيلُfew
وَمَا ضَرَّ أَنَّهُنَّ قَلِيلُ
Welcome, noble ladies of purity and benevolence;
Welcome, O noble ladies of purity and beneficence,
what matter that they are few?
And it does no harm that they are few.
بَالأَيَادِيthrough the favors الَّتِيwhich بَذَلْتُنَّyou (women) bestowed كَمْhow many
بَالأَيَادِي الَّتِي بَذَلْتُنَّ كَمْ
بَشَّbrightened حَزِينٌa sorrowful person بَاكٍweeping وَصَحَّand recovered عَلِيلُan ailing person
بَشَّ حَزِينٌ بَاكٍ وَصَحَّ عَلِيلُ
Through the hands you extended, how many
Through the favors you bestowed, how many
a grieving, weeping soul smiled, and an ailing one recovered!
A sorrowful weeper brightened, and an ailing person recovered!
عِيدُfestival فِرْيَالFerial أَيُّwhat a عِيدٍfestival تَحَلَّىwas adorned
عِيدُ فِرْيَال أَيُّ عِيدٍ تَحَلَّى
فِيهِin it مَغْزًىsignificance سامٍlofty ومَعْنًىand meaning جَمِيلُbeautiful
فِيهِ مَغْزًى سامٍ ومَعْنًى جَمِيلُ

هُوَit عِيدُfestival النَّشءِthe young generation الجَدِيدِnew وذِكْرَاهُand its memory
هُوَ عِيدُ النَّشءِ الجَدِيدِ وذِكْرَاهُ
سَتَبْقَىwill endure مَاas long as أَعْقَبَsucceeded الْجِيلَthe generation جِيلُa generation
سَتَبْقَى مَا أَعْقَبَ الْجِيلَ جِيلُ
It is the feast of the new generation; its memory
It is the festival of the new generation, and its memory
will endure as long as generation follows generation.
Will endure as long as one generation succeeds another.
لِتَصُنْهاmay it protect her عِنَايَةُcare اللهِGod وَلْتَنْمُand may she grow
لِتَصُنْها عِنَايَةُ اللهِ وَلْتَنْمُ
فَينْمُوso it grows الخَيْرُgoodness العَمِيمُwidespread الجَزِيلُabundant
فَينْمُو الخَيْرُ العَمِيمُ الجَزِيلُ
May God’s care preserve her, and may she grow,
May God's care protect her, and may she grow,
that goodness, all-embracing and abundant, may grow.
So that widespread, abundant goodness may grow.
وَلْيَكنْand may it be حَظthe lot مُنْجِبَيْهَاher two parents الْعِظيمَيْنِboth great
وَلْيَكنْ حَظ مُنْجِبَيْهَا الْعِظيمَيْنِ
سُعُودٌgood fortunes تَعْلُوrise وَعُمْرُand a lifespan طَوِيلُlong
سُعُودٌ تَعْلُو وَعُمْرُ طَوِيلُ
And may her two august parents’ lot be
And may the lot of her two great parents be
ever-rising happiness and long life.
Rising good fortune and a long life.
جَلَّexalted is مَنْHe who فِيin سَنَىradiance الفَرِيدَةِthe peerless one (Farida) أَبْدَىrevealed
جَلَّ مَنْ فِي سَنَى الفَرِيدَةِ أَبْدَى
لَمْحةًa glimpse مِنْof سَنَاهُHis radiance فِيمَاin what يُنِيلُHe bestows
لَمْحةً مِنْ سَنَاهُ فِيمَا يُنِيلُ
Exalted is He who, in the peerless one’s radiance, revealed
Exalted is He who, in peerless Farida's radiance, revealed
a glimmer of His splendor through what He bestows.
A glimpse of His radiance in what He bestows.
جَلَّexalted is مَنْHe who زَانَadorned بِالمَزَايَاwith virtues مَلِيكاًa king
جَلَّ مَنْ زَانَ بِالمَزَايَا مَلِيكاً
مَالَهُhe has no بِاجْتِمَاعِهِنَّwith them all combined مِثيلُequal
مَالَهُ بِاجْتِمَاعِهِنَّ مِثيلُ
Exalted is He who adorned a king with virtues,
Exalted is He who adorned a king with virtues
a king unmatched in their union.
Whose combination leaves him without an equal.
كُلَّevery يَوْمٍday فَضْلٌbounty طَرِيفٌfresh فَمَاso no
كُلَّ يَوْمٍ فَضْلٌ طَرِيفٌ فَمَا
يَكْفِيsuffices ثَنَاءٌpraise وَمَاand not يَفِيdoes justice تَبجِيلُveneration
يَكْفِي ثَنَاءٌ وَمَا يَفِي تَبجِيلُ
Each day, a fresh bounty—thus no

praise suffices, nor can homage do it justice.

مِنْحَةُgift الْيَوْمِtoday بَعْدَafter أَلْفِa thousand دَلِيلٍproof

يَمْلأُfills العيْنَthe eye جَاءَcame فِيهَاin it دَلِيلُa proof
يَمْلأُ العيْنَ جَاءَ فِيهَا دَلِيلُ
Today’s gift, after a thousand proofs—

in it came a proof that fills the eye.
That fill the eye, bears yet another proof:
إِنَّindeed فَارُوقَنَاour Farouk لَسَيْفٌtruly a sword وَدِرْعٌand a shield
إِنَّ فَارُوقَنَا لَسَيْفٌ وَدِرْعٌ
وَحِمًىand a refuge لِلْحِمَىfor the homeland وَشَمْسٌand a sun وَنِيلُand a Nile
وَحِمًى لِلْحِمَى وَشَمْسٌ وَنِيلُ
Indeed, our Farouk is surely a sword and shield,
Indeed, our Farouk is truly a sword and a shield,
a bulwark for the realm, a sun, and a Nile.
And a refuge for the homeland, a sun and a Nile.
