هَذِيthis عُكَاظٌUkaz وَذَاكَand that مَعْهَدُهَاher gathering place
هَذِي عُكَاظٌ وَذَاكَ مَعْهَدُهَا
أَنْبَغُmost gifted فِتْيَانِهَاher youths مُجَدِّدُهَاher renewer
أَنْبَغُ فِتْيَانِهَا مُجَدِّدُهَا
This is Ukaz, and that is her gathering place;
This is Ukaz, and that is its arena
the most gifted of her youths is her renewer.
Where its finest youths renew it
بَاتَتْhave come to إِلَيْهَاfor her المُنَىwishes تَتُوقُyearn وَقَدْand indeed
بَاتَتْ إِلَيْهَا المُنَى تَتُوقُ وَقَدْ
طَالَhas grown long عَلَىfor الرَّاقِبِينَthose waiting مَوْعِدُهَاher appointed time
طَالَ عَلَى الرَّاقِبِينَ مَوْعِدُهَا
Wishes have come to yearn for her, and indeed
The wishes turn to it, longing and having
her appointed hour has been long in coming for those waiting.
Waited long for its appointed time
فِيin مِصْرَEgypt قَامَتْshe arose وَجَلَّand was great مَأْثَرَةًas an achievement
فِي مِصْرَ قَامَتْ وَجَلَّ مَأْثَرَةً
لِلْعُرْبِfor the Arabs مَاwhat قَدْindeed أَعَادَrevived مَشْهَدُهَاher assembly
لِلْعُرْبِ مَا قَدْ أَعَادَ مَشْهَدُهَا

وَأَطْرَبَand enraptured العَصْرَthe age مِنْfrom مَنَابِرِهَاher pulpits
وَأَطْرَبَ العَصْرَ مِنْ مَنَابِرِهَا
بَلْnay كُلَّevery عَصْرٍage يَجِيءُto come مُنْشِدُهَاher reciter
بَلْ كُلَّ عَصْرٍ يَجِيءُ مُنْشِدُهَا
And from her pulpits the age was enraptured—
And its platforms enlivened the age
nay, every age to come—by her bard.
Nay, every age has its reciter there
وَنَافَرَand challenged القِرْنَthe rival فِيin مَجَاوِلِهَاher arenas
وَنَافَرَ القِرْنَ فِي مَجَاوِلِهَا
أَرْصَنُهَاher soundest فِطْنَةًin discernment وَأَشْرَدُهَاand her most untamed
أَرْصَنُهَا فِطْنَةً وَأَشْرَدُهَا
And in her arenas the rival was challenged
And the generations vied in its contests
by her soundest in discernment and her most untamed.
Wise in its conventions and unfettered in flight
مِنَof النُّهَىintellect سُمْرُهَاher dusky spears الَّتِيwhich اشْتَبَكَتْinterlocked
مِنَ النُّهَى سُمْرُهَا الَّتِي اشْتَبَكَتْ
وَالبِيضُand the white swords مَشْهُورُهَاtheir drawn ones وَمَغْمَدُهَاand their sheathed ones
وَالبِيضُ مَشْهُورُهَا وَمَغْمَدُهَا
Of intellect are her dusky spears that interlocked,
Pure are its pearls which intertwined

Rivaling the costliest speech, excelling it
فَأَتْقِنُواso perfect مِثْلَهَاlike them الفِعَالَdeeds يَعُدْwill return
فَأَتْقِنُوا مِثْلَهَا الفِعَالَ يَعُدْ
لِمِصْرَto Egypt سُلْطَانُهَاher sovereignty وَسُؤْدُدُهَاand her eminence
لِمِصْرَ سُلْطَانُهَا وَسُؤْدُدُهَا
So perfect your deeds to match them, and there will return
So accomplish deeds its equal, and it will restore
to Egypt her sovereignty and her eminence.
