The splendor of remembrance has reached its height

in the majesty of this great ceremony.

Look at these delegations, now that

the assembly hall can scarcely hold them: you will find Egypt.

In breasts and on faces there is nothing but

a melting heart and a grateful eye.

one cherished, who weeps for her dutiful son.

she counts her many cherished sons.

She weeps for a noble man who, in loyalty to her,

exhausted his strength and spent his lifetime.

Time's passage in her bereavement is not

something that soothes her burning ribs.

Never could she forget him; whenever she turns,

she finds a trace of him in her glory.

A hero who intervened while fate had

a course—and he changed that course.

Through judgment, while the swords lay sheathed,

he secured success and won victory.

So he swept away an age that subjected his nation

to humiliation, and renewed an age of greatness.

is gained by whoever studies them!

its treasures to rubies and pearls.

    لاَ تقْرَؤُنَّ كِتَابَهَا عَبْرَا

    So discern the great lessons within them;

do not read their book merely in passing.

along successive paths toward their like.

O you whose life we recount today,

so that it deepens our knowledge of our times.

You were a treasure for the land, and you have

left a treasure in its history.

That life you gave in generosity

and integrity, and won it as glory.

    فَأَلْبَسْ شبَاباً خَالِداً نَضْرَا

    You wore it out, while its youth was threadbare;

so put on a fresh, immortal youth.

A reward you won, though you had not

    ever sought that reward.

and thus her people excel at giving thanks.

A people roused by the wrong done to them—

    indeed, injustices oppress the free.

There was no alternative to their risking all

to live—or perishing in patient endurance.

So you rose to defend their cause,

bearing the burden of its affairs.

in high office, that rugged mount,

    passing from danger to danger,

and warding off threats from right and left,

with the cunning of one whose troops and equipment

come from himself, whether he charges or retreats.

his character, and truthfulness with cunning.

of people, as he marshaled his thoughts.

as though he were giving reason wine to drink.

the sweet and bitter of life alike.

of attaining them—or of earning an excuse.

until he changed their difficulty to ease.

The most a rival could do in a dispute was

to recoil from him, having gained nothing,

from a smooth, firmly rooted rock

that neither tide nor ebb could weaken.

And the people staunchly defend their assembly,

refusing to let their blood be squandered in vain.

was fractured, though they ought rather to have mended it.

mutual strife has barred its way for an age.

Far be it from you to fear! You were never, even if

a brave man faltered, one to falter out of fright.

has it unveiled a face, or unveiled a full moon?

How beautiful it is! It stands forth to teach us

not to let misfortune constrict our breasts.

And so you were throughout life: whenever

the days frowned upon you, you smiled,

And whoever does not lack patience prevails.

Whoever misses the first chance, yet holds fast to

his faith, will not miss the next.
