The president died; along every road went

that announcement of death, and it flew in every direction.

Dead is the self-made, nobly born man who

    was neither overbearing nor tyrannical.

Dead is the man who vied with others in love

on the day of defending honor, yet lived without contention.

Fix your station wherever you wish, for it

is surely the outcome of that determination.

    وَإِذَا دَنَوْتَ بِهِ اكْتَسَى بِغُبَارِ

    So if you rise with it, it wears a necklace of stars;

and if you descend with it, it clothes itself in dust.

    وَإِذَا افْتَقَرْتَ بِهِ اكْتَفَى بِقَفَارِ

    And if you grow rich through it, it delights in the heights;

and if you grow poor through it, it is content with barren wastes.

And the dearest thing you decree for yourself is attainable

for you, if you render what is due in proper measure.

Duties are sorrow and the rending of gallbladders,

yet within them is honey for the honey-gatherer.

It is no trembling coward who rises to shoulder what

they inspire, nor any cringing chatterer.

To God belongs the glory of those who taste their torment,

and the dignity of the one they have worn down with burdens.

What glory—the glory of one who plunged into the lions' thicket,

and guarded truth while calamities were beasts of prey!

The sword of fate, having struck Muhammad,

struck fidelity with its severing edge.

    Blindness? No, no, but wisdom

    confirmed through unbroken repetition.

The martyr calls forth a thousand of his like,

and through them the succession of stages is completed.

O you who were slain, may your graves be watered

by the bounty of the Rewarder and the mercy of the All-Forgiving.

We do indeed weep for each one lying lifeless

among you, our livers burning for him.

The throne, the throne of truth, flourishes, adorned

with blood flowing upon it in martyrdom.

And the earth, when watered with the dark blood of innocence,

exults, seized by a tremor of intoxication,

with the pride of a bride whose strung jewels have grown precious,

and whose pathways are decked with scattered gifts.

How precious are your souls! For they are not souls

spilled into the dust without recompense.

In every place where lifeblood from you flowed

lies the purest and most fertile ground for sowing.

We do indeed know their worth, and they are the ones

who gave us a standing among the ranks.

And we revere them forever, remembering that they

    guarded our truth from belittlement.

They increased the Nile's beauty in our eyes,

and the adornment of the palms, and the splendor of blossoms.

And into souls, from their souls, drifted

a fragrance that grew strong, like the scent of flowers.

And it is as though, with heavenly delicacy, they

adorned for us the shade beneath the trees.
