    فَإِذَا مَرَّ فهْيَ فِي الآثَارِ

    The dawn of life is poised to depart;

Once it passes, life remains in its traces.

Youth, like sleep, is bliss, yet

It passes while the young man is unaware.

    فَإِذَا بَانَ عَاشَ بِالتِّذْكَارِ

    A man enjoys his life in his youth;

Once youth departs, he lives by memory.

Speak on, ruins of Baalbek—peace be upon you,

After long separation and distance from your site.

And may you be spared obliteration, you courtyards

    Deserted, yet peopled with glory.

Remind me of my childhood and restore

The image of an age concealed from my eyes,

Sweet in both its states, serenity and sorrow,

Beloved in its benefit and its harm.

When I walked across the silent ruins,

With no smile among them but my own,

Impetuous among them, innocent and playful,

    Heedless of insight and reflection,

    Belittling their grandeur, making light

    Of their awe and dignity.

When I was alone with Hind, she played and we reveled,

And love between us was a familiar companion keeping pace,

Like the butterflies of gardens, racing

    In glee, never at rest.

We met at times and darted apart at others,

Each playmate concealed in a hiding place.

If our separation lasted the blink of an eye,

Longing urged us on, bidding us hasten.

With each glance, we found joy and sorrow,

In nearness, then parting, then nearness again.

There is no unmixed joy in time, yet

The ordeal of sorrows gives birth to happiness.

Whenever we met, we embraced as though we were

Veritable travelers returned from their journeys.

    قُبُلاَتِ الأَنْدَاءِ وَالأَسْحَارِ

    Chaste kisses resembling

    The kisses of dew and predawn hours;

And entwining like one branch embracing its brother,

    Like blossoms kissing blossoms.

Our heart was pure, yet not free of love:

The purest love is in the hearts of children.

That love was peace and coolness,

Then, as it grew, became an ember of fire.

How sweet, Hind, was that time! But

Everything tends toward death and ruin.

Separation broke my resolve and shattered my body,

So ruin walks within a house of ruin.

    Ruins that have bewildered humankind,

The enchantment of listeners and beholders.

    Mighty miracles of architecture,

By people great throughout the sweep of time.

The suns clothed them in stripes of pearl

And agate upon a robe of gold.

And from the nights they adorned themselves with beauty

spots, like dots of ambergris amid yellow blooms.

And dew watered them with a spray of tears,

    Which thirsty blossoms drank.

Gray hair lent them reverence and grandeur,

With which the hand of ages crowned them.

Many a gray hair has perfected beauty and granted

The faint of will a giant's force.

A temple arose for mysteries, yet

Its making was the greatest mystery.

The people depicted every wondrous thing

Within it, with wisdom and mastery.

From its lifeless matter they fashioned fruit to be gathered,

    But only with the mind and eyes;

And varieties of every graceful flower,

    Lacking none of the freshness of flowers;

    بَاهِرَاتٍ لَكِنَّها مِنْ حِجَارِ

    And radiant suns and beams,

    Dazzling, though they were made of stone;

    And birds departing and returning,

Forever in their dawn and early-morning journeys,

    بِصُنُوفِ النُّجومِ وَالأَنْوَارِ

    In hanging gardens resplendent

    With varied stars and blossoms;

And lions whose spring one fears,

    Whose silence terrifies like roaring;

Frowning of face, yet not angry,

Baring their fangs, yet not predatory.

    In their snouts, smoke rises,

And in their glances, torrents of sparks.

Such are their marvels; they have never ceased, at

    Any moment, to astonish visitors.

A wondrous order gathered them all,

So subtle they seemed scattered at random,

In a shrine where beauty is worshipped after

Reason, and reason after the Creator.

The height of excellence in design, and the fairest

Of sights toward which hearts make pilgrimage.

People of Phoenicia, peace be upon you,

On the day the last remaining ages perish.

The earth is yours; you are immortal upon it

    Through mighty deeds and monuments.

You ventured into the sea when it was unruly,

    Not yet subdued by the power of steam;

And rode it as a stubborn steed,

Restive beneath the seasoned, dauntless rider.

If it galloped on too far with them, they reined it in,

And raised it if it fell from a stumble.

And when it surged with them, they all but

Reached out playfully to seize the moons.

It is no hard thing to immortalize a name upon the

earth, for those who immortalized it upon the seas.

They built it for the sun as a house of prayer,

And the Romans completed the house's adornment.

They were the heralds of prosperity in that

Age, and masters of civilization in the cities.

They carved the firm-rooted mountains beneath rocks,

And revealed the subtleties of thought.

They fashioned statues so well that they believed

These were the rulers of destiny.

They bowed before what they themselves had made,

With prostrations of reverence and exaltation.

Beyond this, is there a goal still to be hoped for

Toward perfection, or some further pride to covet?

Hind beheld their beauty and grew jealous.

You are too radiant, Hind, to feel jealous.

All these statues which they worshipped

Are your handmaidens, O goddess of beauty.
