    The letter arrived and revived

    The sorrowful, yearning heart,

With a glimpse of a friend

    Hidden from my eyes,

And the echo of a gentle voice

    Denied me during absence.

As though you were there in it,

Speaking to me from close by.

You reminded me, though I had not forgotten,

Of the day of the playful girl

    Among the maidens—and the age-mate

    Is the darling of hearts—

In a spacious theater grown cramped

    With every cultured libertine.

    There, beauty inspires

    The preludes to sin.

A dusky woman appears like the sun,

Though the hour is after sunset:

    A queen with a face

    Gracious, and a melting gaze.

With light she sends down the verses

    Of her awe-inspiring rule.

    Her image, within my soul,

    Rests in a hidden sanctuary,

    Fenced by my passion

    And my jealousy with flame.

    My heart kneels there

    Amid the kindled blaze,

    And worships her phantom

In a refuge from any watcher.

But I am jealous over her

    Of a cunning, shrewd man,

A man of banter and gentleness,

    Whose love poetry charms.

And I did not mean Habib—

    Habib's loyalty is beyond reproach.
