    تَوَهمَ أَنَّ اللهَ بِالشَّرِّ يُخْدَمُ

    The ignorant aggressor shot and killed his neighbor;

He imagined that God is served through evil.

What, then, do you say of one who mends his Lord's handiwork,

Whose wisdom is a bow and whose purpose is arrows?

Does he undo a war whose deficiency God did not see,

And increase the number, while God is compelled?

Hear this, you who wrong your peers

And your brothers: evil is what you imagine!

Your brother—love him, for you are a supporter

Of Jesus; be at peace with him, for you are a Muslim.

Otherwise, whatever your religion, you are not

A fighter in war; you are only a criminal.

Will a day come when there vanish from our souls

Grudges that die down for a time, then are rekindled?

Because of them we have halted, lagging behind through our weakness,

While the lowliest of creatures, beneath us, advance.
