تَعْرِيفُintroducing حَافِظَHafiz إِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahim مِنْfrom أَمَمِclose proximity
تَعْرِيفُ حَافِظَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مِنْ أَمَمِ
The height of pride for me in these words
This pride of mine in this verse,
Is to introduce Hafiz Ibrahim at close quarters.
Is to identify Hafez Ibrahim among the nations.
أَقُولُI say مِنْfrom أَمَمٍclose proximity إِذْsince لَيْسَthere is not فِيin بَلَدٍa town
أَقُولُ مِنْ أَمَمٍ إِذْ لَيْسَ فِي بَلَدٍ

فِي الشَّرْقِ يَجْهَلُ اسْمَ الشَّاعِرِ العَلَمِ
I say “at close quarters,” for there is no one in any town
I say among nations, for there is no land
In the East who is ignorant of the eminent poet's name
In the Orient where the poet’s name is unknown.

And has not read and memorized his masterpieces,
Or who has not read and appreciated his masterpieces,
Whether in scattered prose or ordered verse.
Both prose and verse alike.

Should I say they know him not,
The prescribed formality of an introduction?
To pay homage in this introduction I am bound.

Here is the gallant of the age; nobility adorns his face,
This is the paragon of the age, nobility adorns his features,
Though he may not be marked by beauty.
Though not particularly handsome or sublime.

When inspiration reveals itself to you, radiant
When inspiration radiates through his eyes,
In his two eyes, do not look at his dark complexion.
Look not to his appearance or complexion.

And if you discern in him a weary frame,
If his body seems weary and fatigued,
Under its burden, he is at the same time good-humored.
In moments he is lively and bright of spirit.

Disregard the flesh, and salute the spirit in a man
Let go of appearances and breathe life into a man
Among the noblest of humankind in character and disposition.
Of the noblest character and manners.

We are bewildered by him; you cannot tell where his distinction lies:
I am dazzled by him, though you know not his uniqueness
In his rhymes, wondrous though they are, or in his lofty aims?
In rhyme and meter, even if minds are occupied.

His radiant virtues have appeared, shining
His shining virtues are evident
To those who see, as meteors shine in the darkness.
To the discerning, like meteors in the dark of night.

You honored him, and he bestowed his reverence on you,
You esteem him profoundly, and your high regard humbles him,
Openly, neither grudging nor vexed.
Magnanimous, neither miserly nor aloof.

Guarding the sacred obligations that merit protection.
Safeguards humanity that he too may be kept from harm.

To his dismay, the eye of the East lies sleeping
Despite the Orient’s slumber
Unmindful of high endeavors, while the West's eye has not slept.
And the Occident not yet asleep.

If he glimpses, from any quarter among us, the radiance of hope,
If hope shines from any side,
He greets hope with tears he does not conceal.
He revives aspiration with unrestrained tears.

And if his zeal calls him to defend,
If zeal calls him to defend dignity,
He terrifies his foes with a roar like that in the thickets.
He chases the enemies like a lion in the thickets.

Hafiz's poetry is but an image brought to view
Hafez Ibrahim’s poetry is but an image
Of the Nile, overflowing with manifold blessings.
Of the Nile overflowing with blessings and bounty.

And only the echo of birds filling
Egypt's gardens with heart-stirring melodies.
Egypt’s gardens with a melody that stirs the soul.

Poetry as though the people's feelings had shaped it,
Poetry that determines the people’s passions
So what they imagine appears in it as though drawn.
So their desires are clearly reflected in his verses.

You see it as the truest mirror of his nation
Whether it reveals hope or reveals pain.
Whether uncovering hope or revealing pain.

He recites it as a melody without a verbal fault, enrapturing her;
He composes a tune without a tune, bringing delight
And creates imaginative visions, unconfused by delusion.
And inspiring the imagination without dependence on myth.

While standing atop a platform before a gathered crowd.

You would know the rapture of the ancient soul, unable
Been able to distinguish reason from a touch of madness.
To discern between dream and reality.

And if he turns to prose, his native gift lavishes on him
When his talent flowed freely, his genius
The finest language, vigorous and harmonious.
Produced the finest speech, weighty and harmonious.

Prose wherein the arts of rhetoric intermingled
Among scenes, opinions, and wise sayings;
Between scenes, ideas, and wisdom.

Of smooth diction and language free of defect.

But I warn you, Hafez Ibrahim has
Has other sides to his greatness.
Other dimensions that display his greatness.

You have sought God's protection from hungry eyes for a brother
Seek refuge in God from the deception of eyes that see
Who passes beyond refinement into gluttony.
A fellow who exceeds elegance and tastes.

We lived as companions of youth in Egypt, and famed
We lived as friends in our youth in Egypt, and for ages
For years were our exploits at every dining place.
Our affairs were known in every gathering.

So the necklace, after a third of a century, remains unscattered,
For thirty years the necklace hasn’t broken,
And its strand, like a banquet spread, remains unbroken.
Its cord hasn’t snapped or come undone.

He saw me endure in his gatherings
The prowess of a noble man who thinks well of generosity,
The trials of a free man, good of thought and generous.

Frequenting great households in the outlying districts,
Traveling to remote homes and daring raids
And plunging into gatherings in al-Harith;
To conquer the nomads in the desert land.

He attends their banquets, fully supplied with delicacies
Attending their feasts, enjoying their delicacies,
And perfected in the courtesy of masters and servants.
Perfecting the manners of hosts and servants.

So my rivalry enraged him—no crime in that;
So he resented my competition, and rightly so,
Nor is there any crime in an aggrieved man's anger.
Though no crime in the resentment of one aggrieved.

So he came to you, and despite all his affection,
He came to you embittered, displaying the claws
He bares an avenger's back teeth, swollen with rancor.
Of a grieving lion, vengeful and enraged.

Feed him, fulfill your duty to your companion,
And give him no day's respite from surfeit.
Grant him no rest from worldly indulgences.

Make the price of fine cuisine affordable,
For many who pay a cost are truly gainers.
For a debtor may pay a high price for a precious gain.

The least of his remarks, if set in the balance, would outweigh
The least of his conversation, if weighed, would outweigh
The costliest treasures in worth and value.
The costliest luxuries in value and price.

And many a witticism of his captures minds when
He has many a subtle point that captivates minds
It flows from a pen or is repeated by a mouth.
When traced with a pen or recited aloud.

Is a gift of God, so it’s been said since ancient times.

Honor him, for he is a gift from Egypt to
The most faithful of her neighbors in pledges and bonds.
Its most righteous neighbor, faithful to its pact.
