The friends were gathered in love and brotherhood
He gathered the companions in love and brotherhood
By two stars from Saidnaya and al-Shahba.
Two stars from Sidon and the Pleiades

They rose on the Nile's horizon and shone there,
They rose on the Nile's horizon and shone upon it
In a halo of nobility and eminence.
In an aura of dignity and sublimity

Al-Kinana's firmament, itself the jewel of exalted glory—
The star of nobility and the gem of the sublime
Its radiance brings to light the stars among the living.
Whose radiance outshines the stars of the living

The world turns its gaze toward their lights,
The world gazed in awe at their brilliance
Dazzled by the blazing rays of light.
Dazzled by the splendor of their lights
فَرَنَاso he gazed إِلَيْهَاtoward them حَبرُthe pontiff of رَوُمَةَRome وَانْثَنَىand proceeded

So Rome's pontiff gazed toward them and began
The ink of Rome's pen inclined towards them
To offer the two stars sweet praise.
And offered the two stars generous praise
شَغَفَتْهُcaptivated him آياتُsigns of المآثِرِnoble deeds منْهُمَاfrom the two of them

فَجَزَىso he repaid عَلَىfor الآلاءِthe favors بالآلاءِwith favors
The signs of their noble deeds captivated him,
He was enthralled by the signs of their great deeds
So he repaid favors with favors.
And repaid favor with favor

And he called to the All-Merciful in his prayers:
And invoked the Most Merciful in his prayers
O my Lord, bless the abode of the generous!
"O Lord, bless the abode of the generous!"

A gathering illumined by the two Farqad stars, just as
A gathering illuminated by the two moons as
The Magi's star illumined the Virgin's cave.
The star of the Magi illuminated the Virgin's cave

We came to him, our gifts treasures
Heavenly treasures, reserved for princes.
Of excellence, restricted to rulers

The myrrh there and the frankincense are our prose,
Myrrh, frankincense, our scattering
And the gold is some of the poets' musings.
Some musings of the poets

Poetry is the book of noble deeds; it preserves them
Poetry, the book of generous deeds that protects them
With care, and passes them down to posterity.
Zealously, and passes them on to sons

Without it, through the ages, none would know
Without it, over the ages, gems would not be known
Illustrious deeds, nor would their lasting survival be assured.
Nor would virtues last long

Its nightingales sang in the grove of a gathering,
His nightingales sang with delightful melody
Where the Father of Fathers presided.
As the father of fathers led

Light is in his features, and truth in
Light in his portions, truth in his words
His words, and purity in his soul.
And purity in intents

Praying by night to God, he shoulders,
Devoted to God, burdened with the weight
Despite the weight of years, crushing burdens.
Of heavy years and grave duties

Seeking a rain of his Lord's mercy for the people,
Seeking God's mercy for the people
Interceding for them against their errors.
Interceding for their sins

And when he takes his seat upon the throne, he is like
And when upon the Throne he sat, it was as if
Moses, who spoke with God, upon Sinai's peaks.
He was Moses the Kalim on Mount Sinai

He stretched forth the white hand, made fair by piety,
He stretched out his blessed hand, adorned with piety
To adorn the breast of those with a white hand—
To grace the chests of the white-handed

A blessing bestowed generously by Peter's successor,
Blessings he gave, like the successor of Peter
And God, through it, is the giver of blessings.
As God, the Giver, granted blessings

This jeweled badge is but part of what fills to overflowing
This is but some of what the books of angels recorded
The angels' books: splendid recompense.
Of the rewards of venerable years
