The crown is the crown of mighty, enthroned kings,

fashioned from generosity, resolve, and boldness.

    فَأَلبَسْهُ أَحْسَنَ لِبْسَةٍ لِدَوامِ

    You were given it as successor to forebears who passed on;

so wear it in the finest fashion, that it may endure.

And gird yourself with the sword which, if called

by truth's herald, will never be blunt.

You will find it the strongest equipment for battle,

and indeed the strongest equipment for peace.

Before your grandfather's sword, when he founded his kingdom,

necks bowed, and every sword yielded.

With it he won conquests and dispatched his armies,

    victorious, with banners raised.

Today you find it dew made solid,

after the bloody dye has faded.

    وَالرَّأْيُ قَدْ يُغْنِي عَنِ الصَّمْصَامِ

    He left its use for your judgment to direct;

and judgment may dispense with the sharp sword.

Is there a further seat for you in the heights, after

you were installed by inheritance upon the noblest summit?

Far from it: inherited glory cannot replace newly won glory,

and alongside noble lineage, you have the spirit of 'Isam.

A throne was established, but its construction remained unfinished

until a hundred years had passed.

You were entrusted with it at the outset of its independence,

and consultation provides its strongest supports.

How dear consultation is to a king who believes

he should not drive the people like grazing livestock!

It gathered hearts around you, and the best thing that

gathers hearts is justice in judgments.

If you pledged yourself to it—and your promise is true—

such a cause deserves confirmation through oaths.

O Egypt's full moon, though still her crescent,

how wondrous your fullness before the hour of fullness!

Kings are granted resolve after experience,

while you seem to receive it through inspiration.

Those early blooms which you displayed—

their beauties dazzled while still within their buds.

For we have witnessed in you every virtue,

revealing tomorrow through the thinnest veil.

Refinement that souls drink in, becoming enraptured,

until they grow light, though no wine has intoxicated them.

Its beauties filled the eyes and brightened them,

like blossoms on a fresh and growing branch.

    Generosity aptly likened

to drenching rain or a pouring cloud.

It encompassed the regions, leaving them well watered by what

they receive of the pouring rain of bounty.

Forbearance, though the bloom of youth is not its usual home,

brought those who acted foolishly back to sound judgment.

It mended weakening rifts by reconnecting

the kinship ties severed around the throne.

Whether it springs naturally from temperament or from wisdom,

through it the greatest rulers attain mastery.

Faith with which you adorned life and protected it

from every blemish we avoid and every reproach.

How much glad promise hopes discern in it

for Egypt's glory and Islam's honor!

Learning—you reached the sweet water of its spring

and drank what holds a cure for burning thirst.

It embraced the highest cultures and pursued

their most refined paths of mastery.

In sense and thought, you neglected none of what

greatness demands of these for the guide of governors:

the supreme authority, whose wisdom resolves what

in affairs is to be undone or confirmed.

You shoulder tasks, however they differ

in rank, for a purpose soaring above them.

And you confront afflictions to probe their depths,

and verify your observations through close scrutiny.

Discernment would give its life, among the lofty cranes,

for one practiced in saddling and bridling,

and a tamer of steam-horses who urges them on

    with a keen-sighted man's guidance and a daredevil's boldness.

If he employs servants, his is the glory, and every man of

standing is among the servants at his threshold.

Or, if he ventures into dangers, he is their champion.

Are dangers mastered by holding back?

Those virtues prepared him in his youth

to become the wisest sovereign and leader,

and to establish the kingdom whose affairs rest with him

among kingdoms in the most exalted station.

Far be it that his first deeds should be forgotten, which

    proved beautiful beyond imagination's aspirations,

and were revealed to the people of the West during his visit.

God's is the wisdom of that visit!

Egypt's lion cub visited the Franks, and they saw

what they would one day experience of the full-grown lion.

with the dearest honors they had stored.

And, with something more soothing than springtime dew,

the spearpoints of pens ran over the pages.

How splendid the decorations, creations of

the artisan's hand and the painter's ingenuity!

Two marvels: above, where eyes fall upon

beauty, and below, where feet tread.

the mind of a listener or a seeker.

lay a deeper goal within what he sought.

appeared images for the Nile and the Pyramids.

What does he seek, while his peers are still

at play—a matter with so far-reaching an aim?

Majesty restrains its master and its ward

from every station of commoners and rabble.

So look at him in museums, asking

    about their treasures, recent and ancient;

    نَفُسَتْ فَلَيْسَتْ تُشْتَرَى بِسَوَامِ

    or in shops, seeking something

    so precious it cannot be bought by bargaining;

or in factories and farms, searching

for the source of wealth for nations.

and the powers of understanding vied with one another.

And your Lord granted those who spoke

for Egypt a victory beyond all words.

They loosened bonds whose cords had been tightly twisted,

and, despite their age, had not become rotten.

And they brought her honor and independence safely out

of the domain of the thickets' lions.

never gathered for a favored man within one year.

So her festivals followed one another, as though they were

her awakenings, snatches stolen from dreams.

Her beauty flooded her nights, so that

no glance fell upon darkness within her.

Her days competed in their adornments,

as though they were the brides of days.

As for your accession, it is the fullest joy

and most deserving of reverence and exaltation.

following another pearl in a wondrous string.

Two festivals in which the innermost hearts declared

what they had hidden, in the most eloquent expression.

How lovely your return, while the country is worn thin

by thirst for the sight of your smiling face!

rejoicing in your happy, exalted arrival.

And the fruit of our jests was

the humor of someone with sound taste.

    and veiled that handsome face.

He imagined his beard inspired awe,

yet his beard repelled no gentle man from him.

and plunged into its deep waters, tireless and resolute.

He is subjected to turmoil and suffers exile,

and refuses to submit meekly to oppression.

He is earnest and jokes, whatever he is made to bear,

and in life was never anything but an adversary.

Calamities pressed relentlessly, but never made him frown,

nor made him forget the smile of old.

O Mahjub, your calamity has terrified the land,

where you had been the learned physician.
