ذَاكَthat الهَوَىpassion أَضْحَىhas become لِقَلْبِيover my heart مَالِكاmaster
وَلِكُلِّand for every جانِحَةٍrib بِجِسْمِيin my body مَالِئاfilling
That passion has become the master of my heart,
and fills every rib within my body.
فَبِمُهْجَتِيfor within my soul ثَوَرَانُan eruption بُرْكَانٍa volcano جَوَىburning heartache
وَبِظَاهِريand outwardly شَخْصٌa person تَراهُyou see him هَادِئاًcalm
For within my soul a volcano of anguish erupts,
yet outwardly you see a man at peace.
الغَيْثُthe rain جِدّاًin earnest فيat نِهَايَةِthe end of أَمْرِهِits course
مَاwhat خِلْتُهُI thought it إِحْدَىone of المَهَازِلِthe farces بَادِئاat first
The rain is in earnest at the end of its course—
what I had first thought a farce.
طَرَأَتْbefell عَليَّupon me صُرُوفُهُits vicissitudes مِنْfrom لَحْظَةٍa glance
فيat حِينa time when أَحْسَبُنِيI think myself أَمَنْتُI was secure لَطَارِئاagainst an unforeseen event
Its vicissitudes befell me through a single glance,
just when I thought myself safe against the unforeseen.
وَلَقَدْand indeed َأَرَاهُI see it مَسْتَزِيداًseeking to increase شَقْوَتِيmy misery
لَوْif كَانَit were لِيtoward me بَدَلُinstead of الْمَحَبَّةِlove شَانِئاhating
And I would surely see it seeking to increase my misery,
if it hated me instead of loving me.
إنِّيindeed I لأَسْأَلُI surely ask بَارِئِيmy Creator وَلَعَلَّهَاand perhaps it is
أَوْلىthe worthiest of ضِراعَاتِيmy supplications أٌرَجِّيI beseech البَارئَاthe Creator
Indeed, I ask my Creator—and perhaps this is
my worthiest supplication—as I beseech the Creator:
أُمْنِيَتِيmy wish قُرْبِيmy nearness لِشَمْسِيto my sun سَاعَةٌan hour
فَأَبِيدُthen I perish مُحْتَرِقاًburning وَلَكِنْand yet هَانِئَاcontent
My wish is an hour close to my sun,
then to perish, burning yet content.
