That bereavement of the noble friend

was an arrow that struck me to the core.

Whenever his memory returned to me, there returned

a waking in my wounds from their slumber.

The day I set my sights, in Egypt and Syria,

on Lebanon was a day of all-embracing grief.

What befell the tongue of ḍād in her most devoted son!

What befell the East in its great young man!

In the cultivated writer, the feeling poet,

and the eloquent, discerning, wise advocate.

In the journalist who was no pretender,

and the novelist who was no interloper.

    A luminary whose multiplicity in

every quality never impaired the unity of his essence.

O intimate of beauty in art's sanctuary

and its prayer-niche, communing like Moses!

Where is he who clothed eloquence in every robe

of genius, and every handsome hue?

Who is there for that prose, with its wondrous brocade

of beauty, and who for that verse?

Who can fashion the exquisite form and bring forth

the meanings in that ordered shape?

There is indeed magic in that poetry,

    neither deceptive nor imagined.

It is, in every Arab homeland,

the collar of its gray dove and the gazelle's tether.

His demon was tamed; it never pelted people

with evil, nor was it accursed.

Few were your equals among those we knew,

among the gentle toward people or the compassionate.

His share in the joy of whoever rejoiced among them

was his share in the illness of every sufferer.

If anguish in his soul dried up his ink,

a tear from an orphan made it flow.

A character breathing fragrance like a garden,

and gentleness passing like the breeze.

Indeed, a calamity that made your brother bleed is a calamity

whose injustice exceeds the patience of the patient.

Then let the most eloquent words be spoken about time

and its painful turns, by the grief-stricken.

The bereaved man's justification stands; rise, orator of the East,

and roar like the grim-faced, crushing lion!

Stir the darkness of ink, and send forth

thunderbolts with the downward rush of meteors.

Bring your mighty verses, and in them

all that arrests and rouses the mind.

Yet I see you refuse, despite the hardship,

to give voice to your concealed sorrow.

Not from inarticulacy; rather, speech in a bereavement

like this belongs to the silent wounds.

    Time's calamities—neither lament

nor brooding silence eases their agonies.

Equal in helplessness, were it not for pretense,

are the complainer's complaint and the silent one's restraint.

How my soul mourns the meteor hidden

in the grave, and the intimate friend!

O my companion, and what a companion you were!

O my drinking companion, and what a drinking companion you were!

Who, after you, will give the night-time companions what you used

to give of the secret of the daughter of the vines?

Grief stirred in my heart another grief

for loved ones from the days of old.

How we were, in the first freshness of life,

    strong, though slight of frame!

A band of the choicest youth, never opening

a place to a traitor or a base man.

It made of its scant livelihood a due,

binding on itself, for the deprived petitioner.

And it experienced the injustice of its age and saw it

as a reason to win redress for the oppressed.

You gathered us in truth's service, as far as we could,

and how august is truth as the one we serve!

We would fill the papers with low-hanging fruits

from the harvests of creative minds and learning.

And rivers flowed through them with sweet water,

from delicate drops, or with scalding water.

Between earnestness and jest, and in both states,

the aim was to set things right and straighten them.

In the country's cause we supported whoever

supported it, or we repelled the adversaries' plots.

How fiercely passion tasked us each day

with defense, and tasked us with attack!

We spent ourselves utterly, untroubled by what we endured

of hardship before the success we sought.

We saw in youth a privilege by which we mingled

    the permitted and the forbidden.

God bless youth, and all that lies

in its reserves of toughness and resolve.

If we entered the frays, thoughts blazed

in their fire like dry brushwood.

And we took respite from the clashing of pens,

    whose scratching rose like thunder.

The haunts of pleasure knew us among their frequenters,

who scoffed at accusations of sin.

And today our voice met its echo

of yesterday, between farewell and greeting.

Forgive the homeland's young men if they turn

    aside from its straight path.

Misguided are those who demand from them,

before its appointed time, the perfection of judgment.

Life's opportunities are plunder for soldiers,

    before a hastened, inevitable day.

One age led us into another age that left

for memories the most sorrow-stirring traces.

So we passed between the two eras like a move

    from one region to another.

The nearness of the borders between them became distance,

and the place of visitation grew remote between the borders.

And we withdrew from waywardness, at the height

of its charm, toward sober judgment.

So, with middle age, we attained a standing

beyond conjecture or divination by the stars.

Elias became a judge to whom the people turned

    for judgment and arbitration;

then a minister in whom the ministry took pride,

    then a guardian of learning and education;

then a tongue with which the deputies' assembly unsheathed

a sharp sword in the face of every oppressor.

Office after office, he gained from his wholesome

earnings an abundant flow of bounty.

Yet the days remained at war with him,

as they were at war with every noble soul.

How can the generous be frugal, when giving is his nature?

How can a man of upright conscience grow rich?

None is more sorely afflicted or more troubled in mind,

to my thinking, than the wealthy pauper.

Misery drained his mind, and there befell him

a seeming barrenness, though he was not barren.

O you who reproach him, yearning for his recitation,

one who is blameless may indeed be blamed.

Petty cares kill, within the souls

of the wise, their greater concerns.

And if what you seek on earth is hard to attain,

how then can you seek what lies among the stars?

Speak on, Elias: some of your ways are among things

in which the learned one's knowledge loses its way.

You bore oppression without complaint, though

    sorrow filled your breast.

Calm and tranquil, as though a grave matter,

when you met it, were not grave.

You never showed your vulnerable spot in a crisis,

except in defense of the oppressed.

    فُ فَذَا مِنْكَ مَوْقِعُ التَّسْلِيمِ

    And you refused to yield until death befell;

that, for you, was the point of surrender.

O cherished friend who kept faith with those who loved him,

and whose pledge was never blameworthy!

If you depart, what a treasure for a people

has become, after life, mere crumbling remains!

Your swift departure left no joy

in survival for any brilliant mind still here.

The world sent you ahead; in any race but this

you were the one worthy of being put first.

So exchange the misery that has ended

for the freshness and bliss that will remain.
