    Steadfast resolves have softened,

and the necklace of great deeds has snapped.

    قَضَى عَدُّوُّ المَظَالِمْ

    The beloved of lofty ideals has died;

the enemy of injustices has died.

Gone is the youth of forbearance and valor,

    of loftiness and noble virtues.

An age was swiftly folded away

by this overwhelming decree of fate.

And a nation of noble traits

has vanished like a dreamer's dreams.

    In every gathering of excellence,

mourning rites were held for him.

What a blow befell learning in losing him,

who was the most industrious of scholars!

    A calamity struck medicine,

    like a demolisher's axe.

And every soul has learned for certain

    that reason affords no protection.

    Against every brave man's will,

    O Shibl, you lie humbled.

Death took you by surprise, and this

better befits the pride of lions.

Today you lie still against your will,

while time rises all around you,

    like a sea where mingle

    its foam and the clouds.

Its drowned one lies at peace,

    while its waves clash together.

    You had no acquaintance with

    this unending stillness,

    after the struggle—you pursued

    it tirelessly, never weary—

    and after splendid endeavors

worthy of praise, free of blame.

O dweller in the narrow grave,

though once your home was the world's expanse,

    perhaps your heart within it

is awake, while your eyelid sleeps.

    يَوْمَ النَّوَى كُلَّ حَازِمْ

    A mystery I ask about

    on parting day, of every resolute man;

    yet none returns an answer

that dispels a grieving man's bewilderment.

Do you rest, though you were

    a guarantor of debts?

You have lain more weary than any

    disputant without a rightful claim has lain;

and departed more despairing than any

visitor to mourning rites has gone,

    in bonds of delicate silk,

though even iron fetters may be undone.

You left your world in flames,

    kindled by a tyrant's hand;

it became a field of deaths

    between the vast armies.

And you were the peace of brotherhood

within it, and war against rancor,

    rousing reason and justice,

    and the crouching peoples,

against the one who sanctions sins

    and violates sacred bounds.

    يُزْعَمْنَ بَعْضَ الْغَنَائِمْ

    You sorrowfully lament the plunder

    claimed as part of the spoils;

    you rebuke every blameworthy man

when no one else among mankind rebukes.

And you never ceased to be faithful

    to every intimate friend;

and you never ceased to help

your brother while the times raged.

    If fortune smiled one day,

you shared with everyone who shared,

    keeping nothing for yourself except

    the smallest sharer's portion.

And if you were afflicted with poverty,

whoever hoped in you did not go without.

The house of healing is a shrine

    sought by every seeker.

No departing visitor turns from it

    until a newcomer arrives.

Within it is medicine for illness,

    and ointments for wounds:

    not seeking God's reward, but

generosity and a merciful man's compassion,

    from a great, generous man

    who was never self-important.

    عَنِ العُقُولِ الشَّكَائِمْ

    He heals bodies and removes

    the bits from minds;

he seeks to guide every people

toward the good that suits them,

    and does not grudge counsel

that is sound, or a decisive judgment.

As though in his two hands

    were lightning, inscribing the parchment:

    wonders of lucid prose

are unveiled, and a poet's verses,

    the goal of every sage

and the dread of every ruler.

    Within them, truths are veiled

at times by a deluded man's imaginings.

    God bless you—and your anguish,

    harrowing and long-endured!

For your people's sake, how often you spent

    gloomy nights!

    No sorrow is ever relieved

    from your mounting distress.

And you never falter in a struggle

    to which hope remains bound:

    those lands so dear

    to their stalwart defenders.

You grow more anguished for them

    as crimes within them increase;

you resist their oppression with all

that lies in your hands, while time oppresses.

    Without it—and I mean ignorance—

no oppressor would remain on earth.

O you who departed, leaving praise

    filling noble souls,

    ذِكْرَاكَ بَيْنَ العَوَالِمْ

    within skins has been enshrined

    your memory among the worlds;

ships of light sailed with it

    upon streaming tears

    to shores of glory,

    radiant and smiling.

Thus the day of that departure [still remains]

    among the commemorative occasions.

    May rains water your dust,

    drenched with mercies.
