Providence watched over you on your departure,

And care surrounded you on your return.

    Majesty veils you when unveiled,

And nobility reveals you behind a veil.

And how splendid the face veil is as adornment, when

Rays are sifted through the face veil!

Indeed, you are the sun in kindness and beauty,

You show us a sign of astonishing wonder.

For from its radiance light is bestowed,

And from its blessings comes the clouds' outpouring.

Wondrous that you should be that sun, and be clothed

In garments it has woven and adorned.

You have arrived, and every person of high standing

Walks in your retinue out of reverence.

And around you is a people whose eyes have found joy

In your face, beheld after expectant waiting.

They inwardly kiss a hand that has poured abundance

Upon them from its sweet springs,

And bestowed upon them ample favors

That surpassed the reach of their vast desires.

You have gained every share of virtue,

And never strayed from sound judgment.

For no blessing has been bestowed on you but

Your petitioners have shared it out like spoils.

Thus do the noble virtues rise

In sovereignty, while greed's striving falters.

When almsgiving reaches its prescribed threshold,

You have surpassed that threshold many times over.

So that, if the sins borne by the nights

Were counted, your bounty would outweigh them in the reckoning.

Virtues that have so often housed the oppressed,

    Hemmed in by the days, in spacious shelter;

And sheltered one seeking refuge, and healed the ailing,

    And saved one crying for help from torment;

And built for charity, of every kind,

    Institutions sought from every quarter;

And reared noble youth for the homeland,

With kindness increasing as their numbers grew.

When the hoped-for goal is distant, they attain it,

Near in reach and easy of pursuit.

Glories inscribed in the book of time,

By a hand that never boasted of henna.

Those who recall them will recite them and rejoice,

As they recite the verses of the Book.

May God guard you, O pride of fair women,

Among their choicest, recent and time-honored.

I have bound myself by pledges to you,

    Bound to steadfast principles.

I shall guard their honored claim with care,

Whose reach will last as long as life lasts for me.

Gray hair will sap my resolve, yet they will endure,

As though through them I regain my youth.

I answer their summons year after year,

While time's ear hears my reply:

    وَيُلْفِيَها النِّفاقُ مِنَ الصِّعابِ

    Rhymes that sincerity makes docile,

    But hypocrisy finds untamable;

They heed the truth in what they claim,

And scorn the practice of lying praise.

And God knows that I do not expect

Any reward for them from anyone else.

And I am no dissembler in speech,

Nor am I partial in testimony.

May safety gladden you at every moment,

And may you remain forever of exalted standing.

To that station praise is offered,

And from that station blame recoils.
