يَاO مَنْthose who أَضَاعُواthey squandered وِدَادِيmy love
رُدواgive back عَلَيَّto me فؤَادِيmy heart
O you who squandered my love,
give me back my heart.
رُدُّواgive back سُرُوراًa joy تَقَضَّىhas passed
وَمَاand not لَهُfor it مِنْany مَعَادِreturn
Give back the joy that has passed,
and has no return.
أَشْكُوI complain إِلَىto اللهِGod سُقْمِيmy sickness
فِيin بُعْدِكُمْyour absence وَسُهَادِيand my sleeplessness
I complain to God of my sickness
in your absence, and of my sleeplessness.
هَذَاthis شَقَائِيَmy anguish فِيِكُمْbecause of you
يَاO غِبْطَةَdelight الْحُسَّادِthe envious
This is my anguish because of you,
O delight of the envious!
وَلَيْلَةٍand a night بِتI spent the night فِيهَاin it
وَقَدْand indeed جَفَانِيforsook me رُقَادِيmy sleep
And one night, as I lay awake,
with sleep having forsaken me,
تُفْنِيconsume الدَّقَائِقُthe minutes قَلْبِيmy heart
وَرْياًburning كَوَرْيِlike the striking of الزَّنَادِflints
the minutes consumed my heart,
burning it as fire is struck from flint.
مِنَfrom الصَّبابَةِardent longing مَهْدِيmy cradle
ومِنْand from سَقَامِيmy sickness وِسَادِيmy pillow
My cradle was of longing,
and my pillow of my sickness.
رَاعَتْstartled حَشَايَmy innermost heart بِنَوْحٍwith a lament
حَمَامَةٌa dove فِيin ارِْتِيَادِsearching
My heart was startled by the lament
of a dove out searching,
مُرْتَاعَةٌdistraught لأَلِيفٍfor a mate
لَمْdid not يَأَتِcome فِيat المِيعَادِthe appointed time
distraught for a mate
who had not come at the appointed time.
تُرِنُّshe wails إِرْنَانَthe wailing of ثَكْلَىa bereaved mother
مَفْقُودَةِbereft of الأَوْلاَدِchildren
She wailed like a bereaved mother,
bereft of her children.
وَاللَّيْلُand the night دَاجٍdark كَثِيفٌdense
كَأَنَّهas though it were فِيin حِدَادِmourning
And the night was dark and dense,
as though it were in mourning.
تَروحshe goes فِيهِthrough it وَتَغْدوand she returns
كَثِيرَةَmuch given to التَّرْدَادِgoing back and forth
She went to and fro through it,
returning again and again.
مَاthe space بَيْنَbetween غُصْنٍa bough وَغُصْنٍand a bough
لَهَاhers is طَوَافُa circling افْتِقَادِseeking the missing
Between one bough and another
she circled, seeking her missing mate.
وَلَمْand did not تَزَلْcease فِيin هُيَامٍfrantic longing
وَحَيْرَةٍand bewilderment وَجِهَادِand struggle
And she remained in frantic longing,
in bewilderment and struggle,
حَتَّىuntil اسْتَقَرَّتْshe settled عَيَاءًexhausted
مِنْfrom وَثْبِهَاher leaping المتَمَادِيunceasing
until she settled, exhausted
by her ceaseless leaping.
منْحَلَّةَweakened in الْعَزْمِresolve لَيْسَتْshe was not
تَقْوَىhas strength عَلَىfor الإِنْشَادِsinging
Her resolve undone, she could not
muster the strength to sing,
مِنَwith الأَسَىsorrow وَالْبِعَادِand separation
thirsting for death, yet sated
with sorrow and separation.
وَكَانَand was يَسْعَىhurrying إِلَيْهَاtoward her
أَلِيفُهَاher mate غَيْرَnot هَادِيfinding his way
And toward her hastened
her mate, unsure of the way,
يَرْتَادُhe searches كُلَّevery مَكَانٍplace
فِيon إِثْرِهَاher trail وَهْوَwhile he شَادِيsinging
searching every place
on her trail, singing.
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen سَمِعَتهُshe heard him
بِالْقُرْبِclose مِنْهَاto her يُنَادِيhe calls
At last, when she heard him
calling close beside her,
عَادَreturned الرَّجَاءُhope إِلَيْهَاto her
لَكِنْbut بِغَيْرِwithout مُفَادِavail
hope returned to her,
but to no avail.
إِنَّindeed الرَّجَاءَhope مُعِينٌa helper
وَمَاbut not الرَّجَاءُhope بِفَادِa savior
Hope is indeed a helper,
but hope is no savior.
هَمَّتshe intended تَطِيرُfly إِلَيْهِto him
وَلَكَنْbut عَدَتْهَاassailed her عَوَادِيcalamities
She made to fly to him,
but calamities assailed her.
فَوَدَّعَتْهُso she bade him farewell بِنَوْحٍwith a lament
مُفَتِّتshattering الأَكْبَادِlivers (figuratively, hearts)
So she bade him farewell with a lament
that shattered hearts.
وَكَانَand it was آخِرَthe last سَجْعٍcooing
لَهَاhers عَلَىon الأَعْوَادِthe boughs
And it was the last cooing
she uttered upon the boughs.
يَاO مَنْthose who نَأَوْاthey went far away عَنْfrom عُيُونِيmy eyes
وَرَسْمُهُمْand their image فِيin السَّوَادِthe eye's dark pupil
O you who have gone far from my sight,
yet whose image remains in my pupils,
وَأَجْهَدُواand they wearied الفِكْرَthought وَثْباًwith leaping
إِلَيْهِمُtoward them فِيin الْبِلاَدِthe lands
and have wearied my thought with its leaps
toward you across the lands,
وَاسْتَنْفَدُواand they exhausted زَفَرَاتِيmy sighs
وَأَدْمُعِيand my tears وَمِدَادِيand my ink
and exhausted my sighs,
and my tears and my ink—
إِلَىuntil مَwhat time? أَغْدُوI remain حَزِيناًsorrowful
فِيin غُرْبَةٍexile وَانْفِرَادِand solitude
how long must I remain sorrowful
in exile and solitude?
لِيI have فِيin الْحَيَاةِlife مُرَادٌa wish
وَأَنْand that أَرَاكُمْI see you مُرَادِيmy wish
I have a wish in life:
and to see you is my wish.
لاَdo not تَجْعَلُوهُmake it وَدَاعِيmy farewell
عِنْدَat المَمَاتِdeath وَزَادِيand my provisions
Do not make it my farewell
at death, and my provision for the journey.
