O you who have gone far from me and were my heart's desire,

Have you left me to live with my heart wounded?

If you are gone from my sight—alas, my son!—then who

is the adornment of youth, and who the light of the gathering?

And for whom is my toil, as a farmer or a craftsman,

or raising an edifice with lofty pillars,

    or attaining great prestige, rarely

bestowed by the days upon individuals?

I had been storing all of this for him who

from among my offspring would become the leader of my land,

and would be the first to respond, should a call come

from the herald of glory among the noble youths.

You will remain, O my son, filling my inmost heart,

as long as I live, and remain the light of my dark pupil.

Abide eternally in bliss, with your eyes at peace,

and may my anguish and long sleeplessness pass you by.
