    O you who sleep in the East in comfort,

    while in the West are eyes that never sleep,

    enjoy bliss to the utmost of its sweetness,

    and within it lies security's bounty.

    غَفَلَتْ عَنْ ثُغُورِهِ الأيَّامُ

    Your dwelling rests tranquil in safekeeping;

    the days have paid no heed to its frontiers.

    Your night is radiant-browed, until

    darkness almost no longer resembles darkness.

    No, by the right of brotherhood, we have not savored life

    as though raging war were peace.

    بَيْنَهُمْ مِنْ خُطُوبِهَا أَرْحَامُ

    In calamities, people are but one family;

    their ordeals beget ties of kinship between them.

    The best that bonds bring forth among them

    comes when those bonds are suffering.

    And when a people is singled out for calamity,

    then affliction has indeed engulfed all humankind.

    We complain, though another is the bearer

    of the grievance; we worry as long as worry burdens him.

    We make amusement a means of fulfilling duty,

    a gentle means—or else all amusement is forbidden.
