They differed in degree
Graduated in age, not merit
In age, not in perfection.
You were a mother and wife
قَدْindeed كُنْتِyou were أُمَّاًa mother وَزَوْجاًand a wife
فِيamong النَّاسِpeople خَيْرَthe best مِثَالِexample

You were indeed a mother and a wife,
The best example among people
The finest example among people.

Than piety and good traits
Piety and goodness of character.

A sign of bounty
A sign of generosity:
Now with white hands

At times with white-handed favors
Outstretched, now with money
Bestowed, and at times with money,
And a needle in which

And with a needle, in which you worked
Spells of permitted magic flowed
Wonders of lawful magic.

Of your unending kindness
Of your unceasing kindness.

لِنِسْوَةٍfor women وَعِيَالِand dependents
How often you wove covering and warmth
For women and children you sewed
For women and dependents!
And in your ample time
وَصُغْتِand you fashioned فِيin سَعَةِleisure
الْوَقْتِtime زِينةًadornment لِلآْلِfor the family
And fashioned, in your spare
An adornment for the family you were
Time, adornments for the family.

Of that generosity
Of that generosity:
A garment as if you wove in it

نَسَجْتِyou wove لَمْحَthe gleam الَّلآلِيof pearls
A garment in which you seemed
The glimmer of jewels
To have woven the gleam of pearls.

It restored to me, after their loss,
Vitality and imagination
My bloom and my proud bearing.

Of those good deeds
The goodness of those deeds,

The beauty of words
The finest of sayings.

Flowed like waterfalls
Sweet and healing as pure water.
