O marvel of the age, it befits us

To renew remembrance of you through all time.

You strove, but the success that

You attained is more precious than victory.

The first signs have appeared of the life that

Has arisen anew; so greet the dawn's first light!

She has shown her awakening to lofty aims—

The secluded woman in Egypt, in your wake.

So she emerged from it, yet she

Did not abandon her chamber's decorum.

    She pardons whoever wrongs her,

Out of forbearance, and seeks to be spared wrongdoing.

Her place beside her husband has become

That of one half completing the other.

She has patience in duty, even if

Patience's path grows harsh and bitter.

Signs of resolve reveal their fire,

    Shining in her radiant face.

And the eye glimpses the adornments of her soul,

More radiant and splendid than ornaments of gold.

In what age was her understanding,

Or her experience, what it is in this age?

She has learned that merits, though

Great, are no substitute for purity.

If there were gathered in a skillful arrangement

    The choicest stones and pearls,

And they caught no light by which to reveal

Their splendor that bewitches the mind,

Would not coal and diamond be, in

    Their mine, equal in worth?

O you who withered in life's bloom, how

Cruel is death in the bloom of life!

Though you are far away, a fragrant waft remains

Of the pure perfume you left behind,

In celebrated books, all of them

Like a garden forever in bloom.

Nor has faded from the people's hearing what

    You sang—a maiden song,

    Forever repeated in Egypt, from

A woman of genius, forever remembered.

Through her anguished singing in her captivity,

You freed the birds from captivity.

What sin is there if a jeweled woman appears,

When her conduct is free from sin?

What perfection and beauty can be seen

Like those seen in a flower's first bloom?

So in the name of those seeking the homeland's advancement,

And in the name of people of noble character,

I offer to your spirit in its Eden

The most precious gratitude that can be offered.

Were you anything but a star drawing light

On the horizon of glory, from a full moon?

Your excellence comes from your father's excellence, who

Was the father of letters in the land.

The most skillful of those who excelled in prose,

And the best of those who renewed poetry.

I fell short in giving him his due,

As one powerless over my own affairs.

And among the excuses of those who postponed

His eulogy was the excuse that I too had.

May the hand of parting be paralyzed, for it grieved us

With the loss of that erudite scholar,

The steadfast worker who, if he discourses

On a subject—speak then of the sea!

The master of meaning and eloquence, who

Taught us what we did not know.

The giver of knowledge to his students,

Giving freely, never as a trade.

He educates the young, though he

Is the highest beacon for the learned.

In his breast dwells all gentleness, and there is

    No suspicion within that breast.

The most sincere thing toward his dear friends

Is his intention, in private and in public.

So may God's mercy and His favor

Be upon our departed until the Resurrection—

A kindly father and a fragment

Of purity, who both lit the darkness of the grave.
