O maiden whose charms genius burnishes,

and who has all the honor she desires.

Do you wish for verse in your book—

the dregs within my heart, or life's last remnant?

That is a kindness granting my name an honor

that other names have won before it.

So accept these rhymes I offer,

with a greeting and praise within them.

It is no wonder, you being who you are, that

writers and poets have praised you at length.

Splendid literature, and verse, and prose—

    light radiates from every word.

And a fluent tongue, and a gaze that sees the unseen,

and an eyelid that modesty lowers.

How could that face fail to captivate them—

    so wondrously adorned—and that intelligence?

What are their lovely thoughts beside

the least of yours, O beautiful one?
