O knights, pioneers of the sky,

We are a people thirsting for glory.

Tell us, and quench our burning thirst:

What is the air of the great masters like?

What is conquest's air like over what was subdued

Of the world's towns by the minds of scientists?

What is the air of genius like, now that

The mountains have risen in it like dust?

The banners of the West fluttered, yet

Yesterday we had no banner there.

So today we have wings there,

And we have our heroes and the martyrs.

The eagle descended with its two eaglets, and

Their hunter was none other than fate.

What a line of glory they both wrote

    With that pure, noble blood!

They were slain for love of Egypt; for her

We are all her ransom, in wealth and soul.

In the house of sorrow, we mourn them both,

While they are among the blissful immortals.

An honor for which, if a man gave

His life, that life would not be recompense enough.

Between those who mourn and those who are mourned,

Most of the living are more deserving of lament.

    O arriving flock, bearing

Solace for its two beloved dead,

Come, refresh us with a pure breeze,

Whose clarity no speck of dust has clouded,

Free of traces of the poison with which

    Humiliation fouls the open air.

What does a man feel in those heights,

When he ascends and the sky is his domain?

Does he see, in the towering heights spread out

Beneath him, what becomes of pride?

Does he see, as the sea is reduced to

Its two edges' meeting point, the limit of permanence?

Does he see the two opposites—lowliness and

    Loftiness—become one and the same?

A flight, if through it a man ascends,

    Holds all contentment before death.

The fleet alighted in our eyes,

    At the seat of their strength and radiance;

And our bosoms received it as it descended,

To the seat of their awakening and hope.

The living in Egypt rejoiced at it

With a joy no dispute diminished.

And, freed from troubling hopes, there settled

Into their resting places the remains of the ancients.

Honor to you, O flock! Do not be troubled, amid

Victory's glory, by the censure of fools.

    Can the assailant roaming in

The eagle's orbit be struck by arrows of air?

Life has been apportioned, and the lowest share

In it goes to the weak who surrender.

Since you resolved to return, and there raced

Before it the dangers in those skies,

Every soul fell silent with fear,

And felt the hardship you endured.

    لَيْسَ مِنْ يَنْأَى عَنِ العَيْنِ بِنَاءْ

    Only distance from the heart is separation;

One far from the eye is not truly distant.

Who, do you think, could describe the yearning

They felt when the day of reunion drew near?

They lent their ears to the unseen, having

Held their breath until it was said, 'It has come!'

Then you appeared to them in a form:

No beholder's eye had seen anything more splendid.

Egypt, in its two regions, was two halves of a heart

That beat for the valiant who returned,

And savored a delight doubled by

A spur to self-admiration and a summons to pride.
