أَفَرِيدُ لاَ تَبْعَدْ عَلَى الأَدْهَارِ

أَفَرِيدُ لاَ تَبْعَدْ عَلَى الأَدْهَارِ

أَنْتَ الشَّهيدُ الْخَالِدُ التَّذْكَارِ

أَنْتَ الشَّهيدُ الْخَالِدُ التَّذْكَارِ

O Farid, may you never fade across the ages;

Afraid don't be far away for ages

You are the martyr whose memory lives forever.

You are the immortal martyr of remembrance

بِالأَهْلِ بِالدمِ بِالرَّفَاهَةِ بِالغِنى

بِالأَهْلِ بِالدمِ بِالرَّفَاهَةِ بِالغِنى

فَدَّيْتَ مِصْرَ وَفَدَّيْتَ مِنْ دَارِ

فَدَّيْتَ مِصْرَ وَفَدَّيْتَ مِنْ دَارِ

With family, blood, comfort, and wealth,

With family, with blood, with prosperity, with wealth

You ransomed Egypt, and ransomed [unclear: 'from a home'].

You ransomed Egypt and ransomed from home

حَرَّرْتَ نَفْسَكَ دَائِبَ المَسْعَى إِلى

حَرَّرْتَ نَفْسَكَ دَائِبَ المَسْعَى إِلى

تَحْرِيرِهَا لِتُعِزَّ بَعْدَ صَغَارِ

تَحْرِيرِهَا لِتُعِزَّ بَعْدَ صَغَارِ

You freed yourself, tireless in striving toward

You liberated yourself, constantly striving

Her liberation, to restore her honor after abasement.

To liberate it so it gains might after weakness

مُسْتَرْسِلاً وَالدَّهْرُ فِي إِقْبَالِهِ

مُسْتَرْسِلاً وَالدَّهْرُ فِي إِقْبَالِهِ

مُسْتَبْسِلاً وَالدَّهْرُ فِي الإِدْبَارِ

مُسْتَبْسِلاً وَالدَّهْرُ فِي الإِدْبَارِ

At ease when time turned toward you,

Moving ahead while time is in its ascendance

Undaunted when time turned away;

Retreating while time is in its descent

ثَبْتاً إِذَا مَا الرَّاسِخونَ تَقَلْقَلُوا

ثَبْتاً إِذَا مَا الرَّاسِخونَ تَقَلْقَلُوا

مُتَوَافِقَ الإِعْلاَنِ وَالإِسْرَارِ

مُتَوَافِقَ الإِعْلاَنِ وَالإِسْرَارِ

Steadfast when even the firmly rooted wavered,

Steadfast when the resolute faltered

The same in public and in secret.

Of public and secret in agreement

فَبَرَرْتَ بِالْعَهْدِ الَّذِي عَاهَدْتَهُ

فَبَرَرْتَ بِالْعَهْدِ الَّذِي عَاهَدْتَهُ

وَوَفَيْتَ فِي الإِيسَارِ وَالإِعْسَارِ

وَوَفَيْتَ فِي الإِيسَارِ وَالإِعْسَارِ

Thus you honored the covenant you had pledged,

So you vindicated the covenant you pledged

And kept faith in prosperity and poverty.

And fulfilled in ease and unease

مَا كَانَ ذَاكَ الْعُمْرُ إِلاَّ قُرْبَة

مَا كَانَ ذَاكَ الْعُمْرُ إِلاَّ قُرْبَة

مَوْصُولَةَ الآصَالِ بِالأَسْحَارِ

مَوْصُولَةَ الآصَالِ بِالأَسْحَارِ

That life was nothing but an act of devotion,

That life was but a gift

With late afternoons joined to the hours before dawn.

Connected in intimacy to the dawns

وَمِنَ المُنَى مَا لَيْسَ يُوفَى حَقُّهُ

وَمِنَ المُنَى مَا لَيْسَ يُوفَى حَقُّهُ

حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْجَودُ بِالأَعْمَارِ

حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْجَودُ بِالأَعْمَارِ

And among aspirations are some whose due is not fulfilled

And from death what is not its right fulfilled

Until generosity consists in giving lives.

Until giving becomes with lives
