O Egypt, you are kin and home,

And a sanctuary entrusted with souls.

My love is as you have known it, in its purity,

And love lies where the heart is pledged.

It fills the breast, with no corruption in it,

On the day of defending honor, with no taint within.

That love is the secret of every young man

Among us who has made Egypt home—and his open avowal.

It is thanks for what she gave, and for keeping

Reminders of favors from souring her bounty.

It is a trait in our hearts, kept pure

From suspicions that would sully its purity.

What land, like Egypt, has remained

A garden that holds departing caravans fast?

    فِيهَا السَّمَاءُ وَمَا بِهَا غَصَنُ

    In her is clarity, with no murk in it;

In her is the sky, with no branch in it.

    Egypt, whose pastures are not

Mixed green and withered grass, and whose water has no staleness.

    Egypt, whose gardens are forever

Lush, where no branch is stripped bare.

    Egypt, whose people's virtues are

Blossoms watered by a cloud pouring rain.

Egypt, whose virtues are brimming full,

And honey and milk flow freely.

They lied who said, "Her charms

Sap strength, and her gardens are dung-heaps."

For she is the one whose nobility is known

To nations, and Time knows her glory.

And she is the one whose sons are shooting stars,

    Never drowsing over Egypt's rights.

Love of her blazes in their breasts,

Like kindled coals, even when they remain composed.

They are the heirs to her suffering, and through them

Afflictions will be driven from her borders.

Their conviction is sound, and does not falter

In a grave crisis, nor grow weak.

God be praised for their leap, when racing ahead

Were minds within it, and powers vied.

The caller to benevolence and fidelity called,

And resolve and keen understanding answered.

A voice from the valley: echoing back

Its refrain were the hillsides and peaks.

The spirit of the land awoke, and there unfolded

What the eye and ear held in awe.

The roads streamed with men, and already

The cities had flooded their broad squares with them.

Like a torrent's flow, pouring forth unbound,

From where it surges while held in store.

From every man wrapped in a garment of love

For his homeland—or else his garment is the shroud.

He has staked his life on her honor; if

She is abased, his life has no worth.

Brotherhood reigned over the crowds, so no

    Ranks distinguished them, nor occupations.

Groups whose hearts drew close together,

Though their environments and languages were far apart.

    No race—indeed, no religion—divides them,

And for disagreement a long rope is stretched.

Affection and firmly established peace are seen

Where resentments and strife once were.

So if rancor appears in a situation,

That rancor goes no further than an opinion.

A people, if their mutual solidarity is genuine,

Are worthy of attaining the utmost heights.

Everyone says, with no trace in his words

Of falsehood, and no cowardice in his heart:

O beloved homeland, offered as ransom

For you are our wealth, soul, and body.

    فَإذَا اسْتَعَدْتَهُمَا فَلا حَزَنُ

    From you come dignity and existence together;

So if you reclaim them both, there is no sorrow.

Hail to you, O blessed bond,

Bound fast, in which no weakness shall be found.

Welcome to virtue's company of noble men,

    In whom are piety, knowledge, and eloquence;

To the counselors, whose counsel is radiant,

    To those who walk the path, whose course is straight;

The finest advocates of concord, according to

What religious law and traditions require.

They gave freely of effort that cannot be matched

In worth by praise: mighty is what it weighs.

Through the beauty of what they did and raised up,

    Harmony triumphed and grudges failed.

Wise men: should there arise for their people

Needs, they discern the subtlest of them.

Al-Azhar, the most radiant, has bestowed favors

Of great worth; other favors fall below this one.

So long live Egypt, and long live her people,

And may you rise to the summit of good fortune, O homeland!
