وَلدِيmy son بَكَيْتُكَI wept for you بِالدُّمُوعِwith tears سَخِينَةًhot
هَيْهَاتَfar from possible يُغْنِيavails مِنْكَfor you طَرْفٌan eye دَامِعُweeping
My son, I wept for you with hot tears.
My son, I wept for you with burning tears,
Alas, a weeping eye can do nothing for you.
Alas, my weeping eyes could not avail.
إِنَّيindeed I تَرَكْتُكَI left you وَالسَّلاَمَةُand well-being كُلُّهَاall of it
فِيin بُرْدَتَيْكَyour two cloaks وَنُورُand the light of وَجْهِكَyour face سَاطِعُradiant
Indeed, I left you in perfect health,
I left you whole and well, your face aglow,
In your two cloaks, your face's light radiant.
Your clothes all tidy, and your visage hale.
ثمَّthen انْثَنَيْتُI turned back وَيَاand oh لَهَاfor it مِنْof أَوْبَةٍa return
قَلْبِيmy heart بِهَاbecause of it وَاهٍweak وَعَقْلِيand my mind ضَائِعُlost
Then I returned—and what a return it was!
Then turned away, o what sorrow I bore!
My heart was weakened by it, and my mind was lost.
My heart distraught, my mind began to fail.
طَالgrew long الطَّرِيقُthe road وَكُنْتُand I was أَرْجُوhoping أَنَّنيthat I
سَأَذُودُI will ward off عَنْكَfrom you وَأَنَّنيand that I سَأُدَافِعُI will defend
The road was long, and I hoped that I
Long was the journey, and I hoped that I
Would shield you, and that I would defend you.
Could shield you, and defend you without fail.
يَاoh لَيْتَهُwould that it طَالَgrew long المَسِيرُthe journey وَلَمْand not يَكنْthere be
بَعْدَafter النَّوَىseparation هَذَاthis اللِّقَاءُthe meeting الْفَاجِعُheartrending
Oh, would that the journey had lasted longer, without
Would that the road had lengthened, that we had
This heartrending reunion after separation.
Not met again after the farewell!
أَفَأَنْتَare you then مَيْتٌdead لاَno لَعَمْرِيby my life لَمْnot تَمُتْyou died
مَاnot أَنْتَyou إِلاَّexcept فِيin سَرِيرِكَyour bed هَاجِعُsleeping
Are you dead, then? No, by my life, you have not died.
What, are you dead? Nay, by my life, you sleep,
You are only sleeping in your bed.
Laid down to rest, ensconced within your veil.
غَالَطْتُI tried to deceive عَيْنِيmy eye إِذْwhen رَأَتْكit saw you مُوسَّداًlaid on a pillow
قُلْspeak يَاO حَبِيبِيmy beloved إِنَّنيindeed I لَكَto you سامِعُlistening
I tried to deceive my eye when it saw you laid upon a pillow.
My eyes deceived me, seeing you laid down--
Speak, my beloved; I am listening to you.
Speak, my beloved, for I hear your wail!
وَاحسْرَتَاoh, my sorrow غَلبَprevailed السُّكُوتُsilence وَلَمْand not تُجِبْyou answered
وَقَضَىand put an end عَلَىto الوَهْمِthe illusion القَضَاءُthe decree الوَاقِعُfulfilled
Alas! Silence prevailed, and you did not answer.
Alas, the silence overcame, you did not speak,
And fate's decree, now fulfilled, put an end to the illusion.
And fancy bowed to truth that would prevail.
وَعَلَىand upon مُحَيَّاكَyour face ابْتِسَامٌa smile رَائِقٌserene
يَجْلُوreveals فَسَامَتَهُits beauty (contextual reading) وَضوْءٌand a light رَائِعُsplendid
And on your face is a serene smile,
Upon your gentle face, a tender smile,
Revealing its beauty, and a splendid light.
Its fairness glowing, beautifully pale.
قَبْلَbefore الأَوَانِthe due time طَوَتْكَfolded you away غَائِلَةُthe scourge of الرَّدَىdeath
وَبِطِبِّهand with his medicine خَابَfailed الطَّبيبُthe physician البَارِعُskilled
Before your time, death's scourge folded you away.
Before your time, you were enshrouded by fate--
And with his medicine, the skilled physician failed.
The ablest doctor’s efforts were to no avail.
هَلْis it so يُقْطَعُis cut off الفَرْعُthe branch النَّضيرُfresh and green وَيَنْثَنِيand turns away
عَدْلاًjustly عَنْaway from الأَصْلِthe root القَدِيمِold القَاطِعُthe cutter
Is the tender green branch cut off, while the cutter turns
Can the fresh, fruitful branch be rightly cut
Justly away from the old root?
And severed from the ancient trunk that held it hale?
وَلَدِيmy son بِسُهْدِwith sleeplessness of العَيْنِthe eye قَدْindeed رَبَّيتُهُI raised him
فَأَقَرَّso he gladdened عَيْنَthe eye of الْمَجْدِglory مُذْsince هُوَhe يَافِعُa youth
My son, I raised him with a sleepless eye;
My son, with waking eye I raised you well,
So he gladdened glory's eye from his youth.
And from your youth were seeds of glory laid.
بَدَتِappeared المَخَايِلُthe signs للفَضائِلِof virtues والعُلَىand eminence
فِيهِin him وَزَكَّاهَاand nurtured them تُقىًpiety وَصَنائِعُand good deeds
Signs of virtue and eminence appeared
The virtues bloomed in you, and righteousness
In him, and piety and good deeds nurtured them.
Nurtured in piety and worthy toil.
حَفِظَhe kept الوَصَايَاthe commandments وَاسْتَقَامَand remained upright بِدَينِهِin his faith
وَلَهُand he had عنِagainst الخُطَطِthe courses of action المُرِيبَةِdubious وَازِعُa restraint
He kept the commandments and remained upright in his faith,
You kept the laws, upheld by faith,
And an inner restraint kept him from dubious paths.
And turned from crooked paths that might derail.
عَلَّقْتُI hung آمَالِيmy hopes بِهِupon him فَفَقَدْتُهُthen I lost him
وَفَقَدْتُand I lost آمَالِيmy hopes فَمَاso what أَنَاI صَانِعُam to do
I hung my hopes upon him, then lost him;
In you I placed my hopes, and lost you--
And lost my hopes—what, then, am I to do?
Lost all my hopes, and now what can avail?
وَاحَسْرَتَاهُoh, my sorrow لأَمِّكfor your mother الثَّكلَىbereaved فَقَدْfor indeed
أَوْدَىdid away بِزَهْرَتِهاwith her blossom المُصَابُthe calamity الفَاجِعُheartrending
Alas for your bereaved mother, for
Alas for your bereft mother, she has lost
The heartrending calamity has destroyed her blossom.
The jewel of her soul, dealt a blow most frail.
مَاhow كَانَwould have been أَعْجَلَهَاso swift she was لِحَاقاًin joining بِابْنِهَاwith her son
لَوْif لَمْnot يُثَبِّتهَاsteadied her اليَقِينُcertainty الرَّادِعُrestraining
How swiftly she would have joined her son,
She would have followed you far quicker, if not
Had restraining certainty not held her firm!
For truth that held her back from despair's travail.
يَاoh وَيْحَalas لِلأَعْمَامِfor the uncles لَوْif شَاهَدْتَهُمْyou had seen them
وَهُمُwhile they were حَنَايَاchests سُعِّرَتْset ablaze وَأَضَالِعُand ribs
Alas for the uncles—if you had seen them,
Woe to the grieving uncles, had you seen them
With their chests and ribs set ablaze!
Bent double in their grief, their faces pale.
بَثَّpoured out الخَلِيلُKhalil وَعادِلٌand Adil شَجْوَيهِمَاtheir two sorrows
فَإِذَاand behold القوَافِيthe rhymes فِيon الطُّرُوسِthe pages مَدَامعُtears
Khalil and Adil poured out their griefs,
The two dear friends poured out their elegy--
And lo, the rhymes upon the pages were tears.
And lo, the verses flowed in tears' regale.
مَاnone فِيamong الأُولَىthose who عَرفُوكَthey knew you إِلاَّexcept وَاجِمٌsilent with grief
لِفَدَاحَةِat the enormity of البَلْوَىthe affliction وَإلاَّand none but جَازِعُdistraught
All who knew you are either silent with grief
Before, they only knew you young and hale--
At the enormity of the affliction, or distraught.
Now crushed by overwhelming, dreadful trail.
يَاO سَاكِنَdweller in الفِرْدَوْسِParadise إِنْif سَلَبَstole الأَسَىsorrow
أَلْبَابَنَاour minds فَلأَنْتَthen you indeed نِعْمَexcellent is الشَّافِعُthe intercessor
O dweller in Paradise, if sorrow has stolen
O dweller of Paradise, though grief has robbed
Our minds, then what an excellent intercessor you are!
Our minds, you are the intercessor to our avail.
قُلْsay لِلَّذِيto the One who هُوَHe خالِقِيmy Creator وَمُجَرِّبِيand my tester
إِنِّيindeed I لَهُHis العَبْدُthe servant المُطِيعُobedient الخَاضِعُsubmissive
Tell the One who is my Creator and puts me to the test
Say to my Maker, my Creator, Tester--
That I am indeed His obedient, submissive servant.
I am His servant, obedient, meek and frail.
وَاسَأَلْهُand ask Him غُفْرَاناًforgiveness لِزَلاَّتِيfor my missteps فَقَدْfor indeed
ثَقُلَتْhave weighed heavily علَيَّupon me وَعَفْوُand the pardon of رَبِّكyour Lord وَاسِعُvast
And ask Him for forgiveness for my missteps, for they have
Ask Him forgiveness for my trespasses,
Weighed heavily upon me, and your Lord's pardon is vast.
For they weigh heavy--but His mercy will not fail.
وَاسْأَلْهُand ask Him لِيfor me صَبْراًpatience فَحَسْبِيfor it suffices me مِنْof رِضىًcontentment
بِاللِهwith God أَنَّكthat you فِيin رِضَاهُHis favor رَاتِعُreveling
And ask Him for patience for me; it is enough for my contentment
Ask Him patience for me; it will suffice
With God that you revel in His favor.
That in His pleasure, you find pleasure and prevail.
أَرْجُوI hope for لِقاءَكُmeeting you حِيْنَwhen يَأْذَنُHe gives leave مُنْعِماًgraciously
إِنِّيindeed I لَهُHis وَإِلَيهِand to Him إِنِّيindeed I رَاجِعُreturning
I hope to meet you when He graciously gives leave.
I hope to meet you when the Giver permits--
Indeed, I am His, and to Him indeed I shall return.
To Him I go, for to Him I must avail.
