كَانَتْwas حيَاتِيmy life لِيmine فَأَضْحَتْthen became لِلَّتِيto her whom
أَحْبَبتُهَاI loved her مَاذَاwhat جَنَتْbrought about عَينَايَاmy two eyes
My life was mine, then belonged to her whom
My life was mine, but now belongs to she
I loved—what have my eyes wrought?
Whom I have loved; what harm have done my eyes!
بِهِماthrough them both جَلَبْتُI brought وَقَدْand indeed نَظَرْتُكِI beheld you شَقْوَتِيmy misery
وَحَسِبْتُand I thought أَنِّيthat I جَالِبٌbringing نِعماياmy bliss
Through them, when I beheld you, I brought on my misery,
With them I brought misfortune willfully,
And thought I was bringing myself bliss.
And thought that I was bringing blessings high.
لاno عَيْشَlife إِلاَّexcept بِالمُنَىthrough hopes وَشَكِيَّتِيand my complaint
أَنِّيthat I قَصَرْتُI confined عَلَىto رِضَاكِyour satisfaction مُنَايَاmy hopes
There is no life save through hopes, and my complaint
No life without desires! My sorest sigh
Is that I confined my hopes to pleasing you.
Is that I fell too short of thy heart's prize.
