فَقَدُواthey lost أَباًa father وَأخاًand a brother وَخَيْرَand the finest شَرِيكِcompanion
فَقَدُوا أَباً وَأخاً وَخَيْرَ شَرِيكِ
It was not a mother alone they lost when they lost you;
They lost not merely a mother when they lost you;
they lost a father, a brother, and the finest partner.
They lost a father, a brother, and the finest companion.

فَأَلَنْتِ مِنْهُ وَلَمْ يَكَنْ بِرَكِيْكِ
You battled the turns of Time to defend their growth,
You battled time's vicissitudes to safeguard their growth,
and made it yield, though it was anything but frail.
So you softened it, though it was not feeble.

Tenderness triumphed—and how many a radiant sign it has,
Tenderness triumphed—how many signs it has,
brightest whenever it revealed itself in you.
Radiant, revealed most brightly in you!

These stars in the constellations are your sons.

on a well-trodden path toward their happiness.
On a path trodden toward their good fortune.

They grew up in the loftiest virtues and vied with
with the noblest men, through all your hands had nurtured.
The most illustrious men through what your hands nurtured.

Their inward natures were pure, their intelligence awe-inspiring;
Their inner selves were pure, and their intelligence inspired awe,
and they built a glory that was no fabrication.
And they built a glory that was not fabricated.

You are she who shaded the loveliest flower,
You are the one who sheltered the loveliest flower,
which filled the eyes of Time within your gathering.
Who filled the eyes of purity in your gathering.

You weep, and move the angels to tears in compassion
She weeps, making the angels weep in compassion,
because parting grieved them when they bore you away.
At the grief parting brought her when they bore you away.

كَانَ البُنَاةُ لَهُ عِمَادَ مُلُوكِ
You are she who firmly founded a soaring house,
You are the one who firmly established a lofty house,
whose builders were the mainstay of kings.
Whose builders were the pillars of kings.

لوْ لَمْ تُعِدْهُ لَمْ يَعُدْ وَأبِيكِ
With resolve, you renewed its age of splendor;
You renewed its age of splendor with resolve;
had you not restored it, it would not have returned—by your father!
Had you not restored it, it would not have returned—by your father!
