It was night, and Adam lay in deep sleep.

He slept, unaware, until the appointed hour.

And all creatures, in the stillness of darkness,

bowed in awe, hoping for an event to come,

    awaited the miracle of miracles.

And the hills, in their sackcloth, lay prostrate

in the distance, while the horizon knelt like a worshipper.

    And the stars of earth were distracted and sleepless;

and the stars on high gazed, bearing witness,

    peering from above, bewildered.

    God beheld Adam in eternity,

lonely through his solitude amid bliss,

seeking more—and whoever seeks more is lacking.

So He saw fit to make him whole in being

with a bride, a partner in life,

a lifelong companion—and companionship, for humankind,

is a need inseparable from incompleteness.

    That is the All-Merciful's law in creation;

He ordained it from the beginning of this existence,

and through it the world of perishable things arose.

Ever since this creation was, long ago,

scattered particles of dust, He gathered

what lay apart of it and fashioned a mass,

then brought it to life, then gave it a body

like itself, the two beings completing each other.

The fingers of the Gentle, the Almighty, stretched forth

into the darkness from the summit of the radiant heights,

and set the sea of ether surging with light,

and laid Adam upon the bed,

to work the greatest of miracles.

They opened his side and gently drew

from him a rib; a figure of grace emerged,

exalted above its source in worth, and drawn pure

from the blood of the breast, not from mere dust,

surpassing its source's qualities with its own.

So Eve appeared, tender in youth,

    slender-waisted, budding-breasted, radiant,

a shining manifestation of the hand of God,

with radiance evident in her, and majesty

that beauty revealed as a mirror does.

She shines forth as night rushes away,

    looking back at her in alarm;

and morning's herald lets down its ray,

unfurling banners of light one after another,

    calling for joy and congratulations.

And the last of the stars gaze for a moment

    وَنُجُومُ الجِنَانِ تُبْدِي افتِتانا

    at her beauty, then close their eyelids;

and the stars of the gardens show enchantment

with the beauty they saw, which became

a wonder to all who see and hear.

And the flowers' fragrances whispered to one another,

and the breezes of dawn called to one another,

and the singing birds summoned one another.

They said, 'This is the essence of mysteries

and the culmination of astounding wonders.

Our Lord, none but You is worshipped.

What creation do we see in a new form—

a daughter of the sun, or has there appeared to Your servants

an attribute of Yours in a unique likeness,

to receive our prostration and prayer?'

A voice said, 'She is Providence; she has come

and illumined your king and sheltered him.

    وَهْيَ فِي يَوْمِهَا عَرُوسٌ تَجَلَّتْ

    And she is a queen who has assumed rule over you;

and today she is a bride revealed in splendor,

and tomorrow, mother of the lords of all beings.'

That was Eve at the beginning of time.

Nothing clouded her serenity in the gardens

but ignorance of the secret of this existence

and a feeling that in knowledge

lay a pleasure above all other pleasures.

So she bought her knowledge with the loss of immortality,

    and bought the secret of love with bliss;

and preferred, over the calm of her dwelling,

a life between health and sickness,

amid youthful dalliance, meeting, and parting.

So if that deed of hers was a sin,

did she not become, when she became a mother,

through her endurance of immense suffering,

a holy spirit loftier than the angels,

a source of redemption and mercies?

She was grievously cheated in her choice,

yet she gained a noble recompense.

And did she not give us love and knowledge,

so that we enjoyed bliss—and that bliss was heightened

by the miseries that surrounded us?

For this we love her, however we may be,

whether in any circumstance we rejoice or grieve,

    or are alarmed by some event, or feel secure;

and love for her, from the most dutiful among us,

dwells in the very depths of hearts and souls.
