Is this the end of all that effort?

Is this the close of striving and diligence?

Is this what noble deeds come to?

Is this how glories end at last?

An illness strikes you that you cannot resist,

And the next day you pass into the grave,

Your breaths fading in a single breath,

Vanishing like a phantom in the distance.

No resolve wards off what struck you, nor

Does a voice seek redress against your assailant.

Even the sword, once a hand has drawn it,

Rings out as it is returned to its sheath.

Even the breeze, just before it stills,

Clamors among the moringa and the laurel.

Even the cloud, as it breaks apart,

    Perishes amid lightning and thunder.

Was it without concern or sorrow,

    And without estrangement or rejection,

That you surrendered your tranquil soul

For a light to carry it into eternity,

And left it to the living, if they could,

    To avenge your death-dealing calamity?

A death like that of the aged, when

The years have carried them to their limit.

I never thought that you could rest without

A task that binds the eyelid to sleeplessness.

I never thought that you would pass a night without

A hope to cherish or a purpose.

But we had not understood that you were never

    Clamorous in pursuit of glory.

You passed through struggle seeking its essence,

And reached the utmost praise without seeking it.

So though you sleep, you have established guidance

For your sons, both gray-haired and beardless.

They took their character from you, pure,

And recoiled, as you recoil, from abomination.

And became many, as fragmentary images

Of one whole man, manifold yet unique.

    They remember their leader, Umar,

In the days when he was the necklace's matchless jewel.

A memory souls have kept alive, so

Time knows no before and no after.

    Coupled with reverence and love,

Both drawing their increase from yearning.

O you bereft of him, how numerous are the sorrows

Time's calamities have gathered in a single loss!

How many of the virtues that vanished

With his death were treasures to a loving friend!

I knew his chivalry with certain knowledge,

And his brotherhood, through a helping hand he lent me.

How gentle he was, and how lofty

In spirit [reading uncertain], and how free from rancor!

How gentle he was despite impetuosity,

Yet how fierce his onslaught against a rival!

How generous he was with a noble deed

Bestowed, and how glad in what he bestowed!

    He meets you, ever gracious,

Wherever you may be; what he reveals delights.

He gives you a sweet draught of his experiences,

Though he tasted their bitter sap at the watering place.

He counsels you from knowledge, yet conceals it

In something like a question in his reply.

He safeguards rights as he teaches them,

With the sincerity of one whose judgment is full and sound.

How often he stood in defense of the weak,

Though their adversary was fiercer than lions!

He defends his sacred law with all the eloquence

    Its freedom from reproach inspires,

Uncovering the secrets of its wisdom

In its commands, prohibitions, and prescribed penalties.

Whatever service you ask of him, when a chance arises

For his country, he spares no effort.

He writes and speaks, sparing not

A breath, though his resolve is frail and he is spent.

These are his virtues, and many are those

I have missed among them in my count.

And the greatest of them, beyond dispute,

Is that faithful keeping of his pledge to Egypt.

That boundless devotion, through which he braves death

To raise a people whose fortune has stumbled.

    Our teacher, grant our ears

A farewell lesson, guidance for one seeking guidance.

I surely grasp what you repeat to

Our souls, and feel what you reveal.

We listen to the words you speak

From where you dwell in the realm of right guidance.

We obey what you have conveyed to us, for in it lie

The heart of rightness and the ultimate aim.

Death, for one who strives to

Bring happiness to his nation, is nothing but a promise.

The striver's death is not, in itself,

Like another's: it is a duty fulfilled.

So learn, then act, and be certain

That life is worth as much as it gives.

And all of time is worth less than a second

In which the self-sacrificing ransom their homelands.
