In God's keeping and under His covenant
lies his blooming youth within his grave.

تَخْرُجُ بِالَأرْشَدِ عَنْ رُشْدِهِ
Pride raised him above his predicament—
pride that drives the wisest from his reason.

It whirled into the depths whatever there was of
his passion, his lament, or his yearning.

So he went on, unaware, until
one current had flung him to its counterpart.

it reels that strong man from his purpose.

A shadowless specter, secretive of step—
whoever crosses its path, it strikes him dead.

it deafens with a shudder to its thunder.

and the overthrow of mountains in its forearm.

It clings to the body and shrouds the heart,
and fills the head with its blaze.

debilitating, leaving resolve too weary to repel it:

that taxes him to the utmost of his endurance.

Cooling himself in water, his soul was
preoccupied, heedless of the water and its cold.
